LinkedIn Top Startups 2024: The 10 companies on the rise in San Francisco

Today, we’re introducing the inaugural list of Top Startups in San Francisco, a look at the 10 emerging companies you should know now in the San Francisco Bay Area.

These companies aren't just growing fast locally and garnering attention from investors and jobseekers —?they’re also building innovative solutions that are shaping the future of their industries. AI-powered search engine Perplexity tops the list, which also nabbed the No. 1 spot on the overall U.S. ranking . The Bay Area's influence as a tech innovation hub is clear in AI's dominance throughout the list, whether it’s Inworld AI 's video game engine, Cresta 's AI solutions for sales agents or Harvey 's platform automating legal tasks.?

The list is built on exclusive LinkedIn data across four key pillars: employee growth; jobseeker interest; member engagement within the company and its employees; and how well these startups have pulled talent from LinkedIn Top Companies . While these are the same pillars used for our U.S. Top Startups list , the methodology slightly differs, reflecting activity at the local city level vs. the country (you can read more at the bottom of this article). To be eligible, companies must be headquartered in the U.S., fully independent, privately held, have 30 or more full-time employees in the city and be 7 years old or younger.?

Here are this year’s 10 Top Startups in San Francisco — and join the conversation using #LinkedInTopStartups .

Methodology

LinkedIn measures startups based on four pillars: employment growth, engagement, job interest and attraction of top talent. Employment growth is measured as percentage headcount increase in the city over methodology time frame, which must be a minimum of 5%. Engagement looks at non-employee views and follows of the company’s LinkedIn page among members in the city, as well as how many non-employees are viewing employees at that startup. Job interest counts the rate at which people are viewing and applying to jobs at the company in the city, including both paid and unpaid postings. Attraction of top talent measures how many employees in the city the startup has recruited away from any global LinkedIn Top Company, as a percentage of the startup’s total workforce. Data is normalized across all eligible startups. The methodology time frame is July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024.

To be eligible, companies must be fully independent, privately held, have 30 or more full-time employees in the city, be 7 years old or younger and be headquartered in the country on whose list they appear. We exclude all staffing firms, think tanks, venture capital firms, law firms, management and IT consulting firms, nonprofits and philanthropy, accelerators and government-owned entities. Startups who have laid off 10% or more of their workforce based on corporate announcements or public, reliable sources between July 1, 2023 and the list launch, are not eligible. These decisions are made by the LinkedIn News team based on company statements and/or reputable news outlets.

About company insights

*Company insights were sourced from LinkedIn Talent Insights . Data reflects aggregated public member data from active LinkedIn profiles in the relevant metropolitan area and includes full-time employee profiles associated with the company on LinkedIn. We exclude members who identify as part-time or contractors. Headcounts are provided by the companies directly, unless otherwise noted with an asterisk. Those headcounts are based on LinkedIn data. All insights reflect a 12-month time period looking back from July 2024. Skills data was derived from measuring the most frequent skills among a company’s employees. Most common job titles represent the occupations that are most common within each company. Largest job function measures the function area most prevalent within each company.

Interesting list and I am not surprised to see Perplexity at the top with their recent partnerships. There has been a lot of effort to make Pre-IPO and Fund investments investments accessible for retail investors as well. Accelerators and Mentorship networks are helping early stage startups find product market fit. Investments in AI and DeepTech continue to be attractive for investors with growing valuations and returns potential.

I was replaced when my contract ended by a kid out of high school that had only taken his A+ exam. Had no clue about fire walls, beating a malware prior to the computer booting, backups, server alignment or people skills. All because I wouldn't break company rules to accommodate her desires. Same problem that infected the servers and every computer within the inside company's computers. We really need to Unionize all computer geeks so we can be on the same page and have all the qualifications equal with one another across the board.

If I were betting on horses, I'd bet on Wiz (build, run, deploy), Perplexity (Market & UX Research on steroids), InWorld AI (LLM's in Ludicrous Speed), Vanta (democratizing Security in various sectors), Harvey (is a very powerful Legal Alexa at your disposal) and Cresta (iRobot call center respond robot).

Expectedly AI-heavy, appropriately so. Don't forget about the less risky plays.
