Every end of each year, I study all my posts and how they performed here on LinkedIn. Although I usually do this monthly, looking at the annual data gives a more holistic view of what worked for me and what didn't work.
Looking at my posts with the highest total engagement (reactions + comments + share), here's what I learned, so far, and some LinkedIn tips for you:
1: All-text posts are still working for me
All text is still working for me in terms of both reach and engagement! And I'm glad because this is the easiest format that I can create in a few minutes.
For many, LinkedIn polls have been working really well in terms of reach and engagement in 2021. In my case, however, I didn't do a lot of polls. But I've noticed that there are polls that work, and polls that fail, too. I'll discuss this in another post.
LinkedIn Tip: Observe which content format works for you and do more of it. Choose the format that you like best. Even if others say that videos work well, but if it doesn't work for your audience and it's not a sustainable format for you, then, you don't need to do videos.
2: LinkedIn Newsletter is a holy grail for long-form content
Finally, I got a chance for my articles to get some viewership and engagement! Individual articles — like this one — don't get a significant reach, so it's not that motivating to continue with it.
Although I've just launched my Newsletter in Nov. 21, 2021, the first edition landed on my Top 21 posts for this year in terms of engagement.
LinkedIn Tip: If you want to reach a unique set of audience and create content regularly, try launching your own newsletter.
3: Posts with external links could work...
For years, in general, LinkedIn posts with links like third-party articles get very limited reach and engagement. However, in 2021 (and even in late 2020), I noticed that adding links to our posts is no longer that bad — as long as the content is highly relevant, useful and relatable to your audience. This is also true even in other LinkedIn profiles that we manage.
LinkedIn Tip: If you're sharing an external link, choose content pieces that are highly relevant, useful and relatable to your audience.

4: Personal stories never fail
Every single year, I see stories among my most engaging posts and among those with the highest reach. People enjoy stories. It helps them get to know you on a deeper level. And this helps them trust you more.
If you want people to do business with you, you have to share a bit of yourself. And do it authentically. Through a story...

LinkedIn Tip: Tell a story that shows what you stand for. Frame your personal story to align it with your professional brand, if possible. Format it well so it's easy to read.
5: Reposting validates what works for your audience
I normally repost my top-performing posts after 3-6 months. And unsurprisingly, even my reposts work. It validates exactly which posts actually work for my audience.
Why is this validation important? Because for a post to go viral or get a significant traction, there are several factors that come in to play, including content theme, format, type, number of active audience, timing of post, and initial engagement received in the first 1-2 hours.
But if you repost your content, some of these conditions would change, and therefore, if it still gets a lot of traction, it means that your content actually works for your audience.
LinkedIn Tip: Repost some of your top-performing posts to validate whether your content actually works for your audience. Then replicate the format, type, style of those posts in your future posts.
