Tool Used: Profile Pic Maker.

In order to create a professional-looking profile picture for free, I recommend the following tool for you.

PFPMaker

It is a free yet very easy-to-use tool.

I am going to show you step-by-step how to create your own profile pic below.

Step 1 - Select Your Photo

I am using the following photo of mine as an example for illustration.

As you can see, there are several things I have to adjust in order to make it a good profile picture.

  • A black line at the right side on top my head which I want to remove.
  • The lower part of the photo showing my hands and the harmonica

Step 2 - Upload Your Photo to PFPMaker

Click the "+" button. (Indicated by the red rectangular box)

Upload your photo.

Step 3 - Adjust Your Photo

After uploading, you can see that PFPMaker already helped me remove the background.

It also provides me with different backgrounds to select. (I like this part a lot!)

However, part of my head is cropped in the automatically-generated result.

Thus I need to click the ?? pencil icon ("Adjust photo") at the left. (Indicated by the red rectangular box)

Step 3.1: Click the pencil icon to "Adjust photo"?
Step 3.1: Click the pencil icon to "Adjust photo"

You can drag your photo up or down.

You can also zoom in or zoom out to get the ideal size and proportion.

See the photo below for the adjustments I made.

I dragged it down a bit so that my head is not cropped.

It's nice to see the black line on the top of the head at the right being removed by PFPMaker automatically!

After making all the adjustments, click the green button "Save". (Indicated by the red rectangular box)

Step 3.2: Click the green button to "Save"?
Step 3.2: Click the green button to "Save"

After pressing "Save", you will see all the generated profile pictures being adjusted accordingly.

See the result below.

Step 3 - Download Your Photo

You can then select the one you like most.

Alternatively, you can further adjust the colour or the pattern to be used for the background.

I am going to pick the one at the right on the top.

There are?two options?for you to download, a?square?profile-pic or a?circular?profile-pic. (Indicated by the red rectangular box)

Choose to download the "square"? or circular"? profile pic
Choose to download the "square" or circular" profile pic

You can download both for different social media platforms.

Usually the?circular?one is good enough for most of the platforms.

Below you can find my files downloaded from PFPMaker.

This is it! Isn't it easy to create your professional profile picture with PFPMaker?

Step 4 - Optimize the Size

The next step before uploading to LinkedIn is to optimze the size.

You may google "LinkedIn profile spec" to find the latest applicable specifications.

As of today, the recommended size is?400 x 400 pixels.

You can use?Canva?to help optimizing the size of your profile picture.

The?free version?is powerful enough for it.

Steps to follow:

  1. Create your?Canva?account
  2. Click "Create a design" and select "Custom Size"

(Indicated by the red boxes in the sample picture below)

10. Click "Download"

11. For "File type", keep it as?PNG

12. Check the box "Transparent background"

13. Click the "Download" button in purple

14. Wait during the file processing, choose a name for the photo and save to your computer

(Refer to the video below)

Alternative to PFPMaker

If you want a tool other than PFPMaker to create your Profile Picture, I recommend you to use?Canva?(Free version) or?Canva Pro.

I have been using the Pro version of this tool to create all of my social media posts, even my E-Book.

You may try it for?free?for 30 days to see if you need those advanced features.

In particular, in case the photo I have selected got?undesirable result?by PFPMaker in the?automatic background removal?process, I will first use Canva to see if it could do the background removal better.

Below I attached two photos showing the?BEFORE?and?AFTER?of my photo using the "BG Remover" function of Canva. (Indicated by the red rectangular box)

BEFORE?

AFTER

If?Canva?can do your background removal job better, you can first download the?edited picture?from Canva (with background removed) and then upload it to PFPMaker to select your favourite background. In this way, you can enjoy the powerful features of both tools and easily get a nice-looking profile picture.
