The LinkedIn Spectrum: Kindness, Egos, and Everything In Between

The LinkedIn Spectrum: Kindness, Egos, and Everything In Between

In my interactions on LinkedIn, I've noticed a fascinating spectrum of behaviors and attitudes among business professionals. From those at the pinnacle of success to those just starting out, the way we present ourselves and interact with others can significantly impact our business relationships and opportunities. Here are some observations and actionable advice based on these interactions.

Just a heads up, I am hosting a LinkedIn audio event for B2B on Aug 1st @3pm EST. I hope to see you there - https://www.dhirubhai.net/events/b2bfounders-howtoscaleyoursales7221637550547841025/comments/?

The Top Tier: Warm and Open

At the top of the business world, I often encounter individuals who are warm, open, and keen to explore mutual benefits. These high achievers, despite their busy schedules, engage in conversations with a mindset of collaboration. They are direct, helpful, and value peer-to-peer interactions. This approach is refreshing and fosters a productive environment on LinkedIn.

Key Characteristics:

  • Collaborative and exploratory mindset
  • Direct and respectful communication
  • Open to introductions and mutual benefits

The Mid-Tier: The "Do You Know Who I Am?" Crowd

Next, there's a group of professionals who have achieved some success but haven't reached the top of their industry. Within this group, I've identified a subset that exhibits a "Do you know who I am?" attitude. These individuals often come across as demanding and egotistical, focusing more on impressing others with their accolades rather than fostering genuine conversations.

Key Characteristics:

  • Demanding and often rude
  • Focus on showcasing their importance
  • Less open to genuine conversation

The Early Stages: Humble and Apologetic

Finally, there are those who are in the early stages of their business journey. These individuals tend to be overly humble and sometimes apologetic in their interactions. They may approach conversations with a cap-in-hand attitude, which can be off-putting. While humility is important, it's crucial to engage confidently and as equals.

Key Characteristics:

  • Humble and sometimes apologetic
  • Eager to learn but may lack confidence
  • Approach conversations from a subservient position

Actionable Steps to Improve Your LinkedIn Interactions

No matter where you are in your business journey, adopting a polite, open, and conversational approach can significantly enhance your LinkedIn experience. Here are some steps to help you engage more effectively:

  1. Adopt a Peer-to-Peer Mindset:
  2. Be Respectful and Polite:
  3. Avoid the Ego Trap:
  4. Engage Confidently:
  5. Stay Consistent:

Summary

LinkedIn is a powerful platform for building business relationships and exploring opportunities. By understanding the different approaches people take and adopting a respectful, open, and conversational mindset, you can make the most of your interactions. Remember, it's all about learning and earning. Show up authentically, and you'll see incredible opportunities come your way.

Exercise for the Week

For the next week, deliberately engage as the person who is peer-to-peer, conversational, warm, and open. Track your interactions and notice the difference it makes. Share your experiences and let's grow together!
