LINKEDIN; SHARE YOUR STORY!

LINKEDIN; SHARE YOUR STORY!

Share Who You Are......I understand why people aren't comfortable with this concept......GET OVER IT!!....This is far to valuable of a career tool not to leverage it.

The best place to start is the "ABOUT" Section on LinkedIn.

That's the first place I go to LEARN about someone when I'm connected to them by a client/friend to see if I can help a person with their career. Typically it reads like a bad resume....I learn about their Long List of Skills and the Professional Associations they are a member of. They usually have some business buzzwords in their write up as they explain that they are "Top Rated"..."A Leader"..."Rainmaker"" none of which is backed up with facts and it just reads like bullshit. Sometimes its even written in third person (my favorite) which I just find utterly stupid. ""Paul is a Leading Lab Designer"" Wait isn't Paul the one writing this??......does he have some plaque that says he's the leading designer or is there a test that he had to take to determine that? How about writing ""I love to design labs its my passion and my favorite part of the process is meeting with the scientists and understanding...…..""

People connect with People by Sharing their Story!

What I want to learn is WHO they are and...….......

WHAT ARE THEY PASSIONATE ABOUT?

WHAT DO THEY LOVE?

WHAT ARE THEIR GOALS?

HOW DID THEY GET WHERE THEY ARE TODAY?

WHERE DO THEY WANT TO GO?

Here is a recent success story that I wanted to share to highlight how impactful this can be to your career. This woman is a talented photographer, in her "About" section she had listed 20-25 photography software she was proficient in and a bunch of acronyms that meant nothing to me.....looking at one photograph that she published told me everything I needed to know about her skills she didn't need to write it and I certainly didn't want to read it! In the text she hinted that her idol was Helene Binet but it was a quick sentence and buried within so much technical jargon that it seemed lost. ""Why is she your idol, tell me and then tell the world"" is the string that I pulled on during the conversation to get her to understand the concept of sharing her story.

#247!

May 11/12:14am; I couldn’t sleep so I was scrolling through Linkedin and came across gorgeous photographs of Steven Holl’s Lewis Center for the Arts. I sent the photographer a connection request and then followed it up with....

“”Your work on the Steven Holl Building is STUNNING! I’d like to make a suggestion on your summary...I would much rather read why Helene Binet is your idol than read that you’re proficient in whatever technical formats you are...(Honestly I completely stopped reading). The more we share of ourselves the better we can connect with one another. I’m confident I would love reading your story about Helene and her work””

In my mind who wouldn’t want my opinion in the middle of the night on their Linkedin Profile? We had a wonderful conversation that ended at 1:15am with a nice note from her...””Awesome! I can’t express enough how grateful I am for your attention!””...

She made significant profile changes to help Build a Brand/Showcase her Talent and Start Building an Audience. I just noticed today that she is now an in-house photographer at a major architectural firm. I sent her a note to congratulate her...””Thank you Steve! I got it through LinkedIn. So very likely thanks to your help!””

I can never fully explain how much I love it when this SHIT HAPPENS.....I love when I'm walking down the aisle at Walgreens and I think of an assist and pump my fist like Kirk Gibson rounding first base after going deep against the Eck!

These are my Home Runs!

OH HOW I LOVE THIS GAME..... “””I was nervous about posting that story, but decided to do it after I saw your original post that started this conversation, the woman that got the job. This is one of my first posts, I'm amazed it has had over 500 views.””” The reason his post did well....he shared a personal story and not just a photograph with a bunch of hashtags...Stop Selling/Start Sharing! How crazy is it that I can write an article on LinkedIn and help change someone’s behavior over in England. #LOVEthisGAME

Steve, as always this is a great piece, but I particularly like your thoughts here. It's always about connections and the story and the stuff that makes us human. Thanks for sharing!

Another convert.....”””Steve, this was a great one!? Thank you so much for pointing out that we need to be more personal and human.? I'm changing my LI profile asap”””. In the “About” section he had a list of his “areas of expertise”....and had 11 bullets; “leadership, marketing” etc. Hopefully that will be gone in the rewrite......
