A LinkedIn Profile Without A Profile Pic?

A LinkedIn Profile Without A Profile Pic?

These days LinkedIn profile picture is equivalent to what an appropriate job interview outfit was 20 years ago. We all agree that appearances can speak volumes and we must accept that the profile picture is an integral and very important part of our online life that deserves the same attention to organizations as other data & information.

Your image goes long way towards confirming who you are. While speaking of trust, remember some basic psychology when picking a photo as your profile pic. You should choose a photo that genuinely reflects who you are and shows your best qualities. Here, your facial expression will do most of the job but you can always use props, adequate wardrobe & supporting background in your favor. For instance, if you wear glasses daily, leave them on for your photo as well. Further, if you belong to a specific location which is known for itself, you may consider showcasing the landmark in background. And if you are known for a very business like demeanor and you want people to notice it, take a straight headshot with solid color background.

An appropriate profile pic sends the message that you are current with technology and it will help you to paint a favorable picture of yourself for your prospective employer.

LinkedIn research also indicates that profiles with photos are much more likely to be viewed than those without photos. Lack of photo keeps your profile incomplete, profiles that are complete are more likely to sow up higher in search results … giving them an advantage over incomplete profiles.

And what do recruiters think in the first 6 seconds while going through your profile that has no authentic image showing...The first thing they will notice your photo and if yo have no photo...their initial thought would be " What is this person trying to hide?" And...They instantly move on to the next profile. So, LinkedIn Profile Optimization certainly calls for a smart looking photo (read professional) with a plain white background that is capable of ' Standing Out' from the crowd. Anything less than that might mean " Career Search Suicide"

In short, one should pick a photo that

  • Looks like you in real life
  • Genuinely reflects who you are
  • Highlights your best qualities
  • Be consistent with same image on all the social media platform
  • If you are going for an important conference/ convention or workshop, make sure to update your relevant profile pic...it will help people greatly in recognizing you instantly which will be certainly an advantage for you.

A good picture helps your recruiter to say 'Yes' in first 6 seconds after going through your profile. An appropriate clear image as your profile pic helps other people to mentally connect with you and create a positive impression about you. People find it easier to connect and believe when there is a profile pic involved. They are more likely to reach out when they can see a person. Therefore the photo helps to personalize and create your brand that differentiates you from your competitors and it also helps you to create an emotional bonding with other people.

But not including a LinkedIn profile photo can sabotage your chances to land a great-fit job. You may be having good reasons not to include a photo but I still insist on including one as the benefits outweigh the pitfalls.
