Latest on reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) crisis
As ongoing concerns regarding dangerous ‘crumbly’ concrete, or RAAC, continue to dominate the news in the education sector, there have been a few developments that schools should be aware of.?
DfE releases its ‘Guidance for responsible bodies and education settings with confirmed RAAC in their buildings’
This guidance is specific to schools and explains the actions school leaders should take if RAAC is present on the school premises.
It does not apply to independent schools, out-of-school settings, maintained nurseries, or independent training providers; however, these settings may choose to refer to this guidance if RAAC is identified on their premises.

Ofsted will not inspect schools affected by RAAC in the autumn term
On 12 September, Ofsted published a statement to confirm that it will avoid inspecting any education setting that is on the DfE’s list of affected schools. Any school on the list will be removed from Ofsted’s scheduling and will not be selected for inspection during the 2023/2024 autumn term.?

What schools need to know about changes to the Prevent Duty
On 7 September 2023, the Home Office published an updated version of its statutory guidance on the Prevent duty. Subject to Parliamentary approval, the guidance will come into force on 31 December 2023. The DfE also updated several of its own pieces of guidance on the Prevent duty.
