LinkedIn News and Ideas

There are so many changes to LinkedIn happening almost constantly, it can be tricky not only to keep up but to identify what’s actually new. You might suddenly notice what seems like a new feature – the blue box behind messages you’re writing, for instance – but discover that no, it’s not new at all. But this list of new features below is exactly that – new. Some will be useful to you, others less so.??

?? Open Tab Links

When a link added to a post is clicked, it opens in a new tab in your browser alongside the current LinkedIn tab already open. The value of this is threefold:

? It allows us to use links without worrying about reach

? It will stop the practice of placing links in comments (which always felt a bit odd)

? It will make it faster and easier to move between a post, its links and back again.

New look-events section

The events area of your profile has a new look. Not only are your own events listed, but those you are attending as well – up to 3, it seems. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have its own URL and access is relatively well hidden, way down the left rail of your Home page.

Our Featured Commitments

This is a way for companies to attract quality talent. It allows an organisation to demonstrate its dedication to the values it espouses through a 1200-character description and the inclusion of up to 5 links.

Auto Embed

This allows you to embed content from external sites such as Facebook, YouTube, Wikipedia, Google+ and many more you may never have heard of. All you have to do is paste the link into your article, hit space or enter and it automatically embeds, displaying a thumbnail or preview. Instant visual interest in your content!

Follow Back

This is a new profile feature we spotted just last week and?lets you know if someone is following you. If you decide to follow them too, all it takes is a click.

Notification of tag in articles and newsletters

If you’re tagged in an article or newsletter, you’ll now receive a notification of this.

Turn on post notifications when following

When choosing to follow someone from your list of Who’s Viewed My Profile, you’ll now have the option to turn on notifications of their posts. This allows you to see more of their content without having to directly interact with them. We’ve not seen this in person yet, but it seems similar to the bell notification without the need to go to their profile.

Is LinkedIn Becoming Too Complex?

There have been more than 60 updates, changes and new arrivals since the beginning of the year. How can the average LinkedIn user keep up?

It’s a continual process for us and even then we’re not always sure we’ve picked up them all.

Many people we speak to are unaware of many of the features that we see as routine – even the Featured section itself is often missing from profiles. And the Services section? Lots of clients have never heard of it. And if they have, they don’t understand the difference between Recommendations and Reviews – which is subtle, we agree.

Now, in the main, we’re pleased with the changes because generally they make the platform a better environment in which to work and give us more options in how we work. But LinkedIn rarely announces updates and often their own Help doesn’t keep up with the changes. This makes it tricky for anyone wanting to clarify details or find out how something works.

Of course, we’re not advocating a return to the old look and feel of the platform. That would be just plain boring. We love the extra functionality and the new visual appeal of many of the features. But it would be helpful if there was an official source of intelligence we could all refer to rather than having to rely on the goodwill of the LinkedIn community and people like Kevin D. Turner to keep us up to date (who does a wonderful – unpaid – job of it).

We’re happy for the pace of change to continue – although it would be nice to have them rolled out in a more logical, consistent way so we could experiment with one before the next three come barrelling along. We would also like there to be one reliable, current source of information on updates to save us all hours of research, hunting and consulting with colleagues.

Or would that make it all far too easy?

Absolutely loved the live with Robert on How to use Storytelling to Crush it on LinkedIn. I can see that tall stories don't quite suit the narrative on LinkedIn.
