It’s weird to say that LinkedIn as a platform has been my personal development tool over the past 2 and a bit years and for that I am calling LinkedIn the land of never ending opportunity.
How can a social media platform possibly be responsible for this??
LinkedIn gives anyone the opportunity to showcase their skills , expand their knowledge and be inspired by the many creators that share on the platform.
There are amazing creators on this platform all doing their own thing, the past 6 weeks has shown me how tiny the little spec of LinkedIn I hang around in is, and how many fabulous people I have been missing out on, I can not wait to connect with more and learn further from them.
Some people take courses, some get a coach , some might enrol back into education. But for me, to build my business, to rediscover me and realise my possibilities by learning from others, LinkedIn is the environment that has been the best to do this in.?
There are voices who advise not to give too much knowledge away for free , popplecock I say!!?
By showcasing your skills, your talent and your personality it shows whoever is watching that you have knowledge about your chosen field or subject and also that you are capable.
And you never know who is watching and who could be silently sourcing their next business partner, supplier or superstar.
There are thousands of creators sharing their knowledge and experiences of the world and anyone can be a creator.
You just have to think of LinkedIn as the never ending job interview, the never ending business or personal opportunity and use it to your advantage.
Content creation for career development
It is easier to give a theoretical example to showcase how LinkedIn can help you with career development if you are actively creating content.
Lets take the role of an Executive assistant and take 2 individuals, Carol and Dave, both have 20+ years of Executive Assistant experience in the technology industry, both are trained in exactly the same software to the same level, both have the same educational qualifications.?
They both have a LinkedIn profile.
Dave has got a profile filled out with his career experience but he doesn’t post any content. Dave looks for jobs and applies on LinkedIn.?
Carol has got a lively profile showcasing her skills and career and also her love of snowboarding. She’s just come back from a snowboarding holiday which she has posted about. Carol also posted about all the planning that went into the holiday, the arrangements she made and how she made sure everything was organised before she went. Carol engages with other snowboarding enthusiasts on LinkedIn by commenting on their holiday snaps and sharing the love of the sport and snow.
Carol and Dave both apply for the same job at the same company via LinkedIn.
Carol gets an interview , Dave doesn’t.
From the 100s of applicants and the 10 that were selected for interview, Carol stood out because she showcased the skills that she uses in her personal life. The CEO of the company also goes snowboarding every year and figures Carol will know some decent places to visit, he’s also seen her content and she’s seen his and commented on it.?

Creating and showing your talents, even just a little, can open up so many opportunities.
Your personality on your profile and on social shows not only your skills but if you are going to fit in with the team.
Content creation for learning
From my personal perspective what I have decided to learn and the direction my business has gone is down purely to the influence of what others have shared on this platform. The connections I have made and the content they have shared has opened my eyes to cool tools and software, and I’ve even gone off and learnt it by myself with their advice as guidance or I’ve literally watched their videos of how they are using it .
By sharing your content and your knowledge and by helping others learn you are strengthening the industry you are in and becoming the thought leader within that industry.
Content creation for support
The support network that this platform gives you is like no other. Content creators give space to others to feel supported and free to express. From the network I have built over the past few year I know that true connection and true relationships quickly go offline and real genuine support relationships are made.
With the right support and encouragement around you, your possibilities are endless!?
Your content, Your way.
The art of social media, and especially LinkedIn, is not to get swept up in the expectations of how others think you should present in your world or how they use it- play your own hand, enjoy it!
Follow those that YOU enjoy learning from, listening to and you aspire to be like.?
And as far as software or socials go, LinkedIn is the most important tool that an Assistant can have in their toolbox of skills. It is a tool for you to use personally and mould in a way to suit your wants, needs and desires and it has the potential to take you to places you never thought possible.
You just have to take every opportunity it gives you!
Easy to lose sight that social media is in fact a form of art - thanks for the reminder & what a great newsletter!
