LinkedIn networking: how do your efforts help you?
Does the "Sower of the Seed" parable work to help people understand the power of interactive and personal network?

LinkedIn networking: how do your efforts help you?

To my colleague, Robby Hedrick, Ed.D., MBA, M.A.A.L., LSSGB , the Christian parable of the Sower of the seeds holds a powerful lesson on networking in today’s world not only in personal situations but also within LinkedIn.?

In our view, the seeds represent your value to others in making connections and nurturing relationships.?

When he suggested this as part of the book’s update for the fourth edition of LinkedIn for Military, I began to think how this relates to real situations for some students in my network.?

So, I tested this modern-day adaptation of the story within several Military Transition Roundtable MasterMind networking groups.?

Imagine a little girl going to her grandfather’s home to visit, I told those classes.? He’s planting his summer garden.? He has the seeds ready, and they begin to look at the plot with the freshly toiled dirt.?

Alas, the ice cream truck arrives in his neighborhood.?

“Grandpa,” the little girl says in that classic smile, “you always get me an ice cream cone.”?

So, he goes inside to get his wallet and tells his granddaughter to begin sowing the seeds.?

Meanwhile, the granddaughter begins tossing the seeds throughout the garden.?

Some land on the path by the garden.?

Other seeds head to the rocky ground.?

A few lands near her grandmother’s rose garden.?

And a few arrive in the plot.?

Personal and interactive networking work like this.? We must accept that not all our connection requests will grow into cucumbers or tomatoes.?

Those that do make this need sunshine and water.

Military professionals in transition... How do you recognize those that will help you for your exodus from military service? How do you nurture those relationships that land in your networking plot?

Matt, it's is hard to know who will be of value to you in your military transition. That is why I recommend not searching too hard but making purposeful connections. Whether it be for a professional career, entrepreneur opportunities, personal growth, future educational connections, credentials, etc, taking time to get to know a whole new world of opportunities will create an environment for any transitioning servicemember to flourish.

It takes conversation to nurture connections into networking relationships. The more conversations you have, the more chances one or two of these connections will blossom into an employment lead.

Great article. What I think some don't realize is we network all the time when we speak to people. Question is are you networking with a purpose? VETS2INDUSTRY ACT Now Education tomzacher veterans advice HireMilitary CareerDFW Hiring Our Heroes 50strong
