At a networking event, an entrepreneur told me that he wants to get better at messaging people on LinkedIn, but he's at a loss for what to write without sounding stupid. Here are a few suggestions for messages that you can send people.
First message to someone you never spoke to that you have been connected to for a while:
“Looks like we have been connected for a while but we have not communicated yet. Tell me something about yourself that I cannot find on your profile.â€
“I am so glad that we are connected on LinkedIn. Let’s get to know each other. Do you have an article about your story that you want me to read?â€
“I am grateful that you are my connection. Looking forward to following your updates here on LinkedIn. How often do you update your profile?â€
Message to someone you have spoken to before and want to spark a new conversation with:
“Been a while since we last connected. What projects are you working on right now? Would love to see how I can be of value to you.â€
“Hope you are well. I'd love to introduce you to some of my relevant contacts. Who do you want to meet?â€
“Hey! Long time no speak... Would you be interested in coming to an event with me in the coming weeks?â€
“Looks like we haven't chatted in a while. Feel free to send me a video or article that you posted recently so I can catch up on what you're doing.â€
Message to someone you want to talk to on the phone but do not want to annoy:
“Been following you on LinkedIn and would love to get to know you better, would you be up for a quick get to know you call in the coming weeks?â€
“I just got off the phone with one of my LinkedIn connections. It was so refreshing to get to know someone that I connected with on LinkedIn! Would you like to hop on the phone for a few minutes so we can get to know each other?â€
“I read your LinkedIn profile and I have some questions about your business. I would love to speak to you for a few minutes in the next couple of days. Are you available for a quick call?â€
Message to someone who can be a great referral partner for you:
“Looks like we might work with the same types of clients. Would you be open with me making some introductions for you to your ideal client?â€
“I am looking to build up some referral partners and from the looks of your profile, you might be a great person for me to make some introductions for. Are you open for introductions to people in my network?â€
“One of my favorite things to do is to connect people in my network. I'd love to learn more about who your most ideal connections would be so I can connect you. Can you send me who you are targeting so I can look at my network and connect you with some people?â€
Message to someone who you just want to be top of mind with and not bother them with any requests:
“Just remembered that we are connected here on LinkedIn and I wanted to say that I appreciate our connection. Wishing you an amazing week!â€
“Thanks for being connected to me on LinkedIn. If you ever need anything, please reach out to me. I am pretty active here these days.â€
“I just read your profile and I am inspired by what you have accomplished. Thanks for being you!â€
“Just dropping a quick message to say thanks for being my connection on LinkedIn. I appreciate you. Hope you have a great day today!â€
“Some people make me smile when I look at their photo, you have such great energy about you. Thanks for making my day. Wishing you only good things.â€
“I’m sure you are busy; I wanted to send you this message to say THANK YOU for being my connection. Looking forward to your updates.â€
“Hey, I appreciate our connection here. If you ever have something you want me to read, send it over. Happy to support you in any way that I can.â€
