LinkedIn Message Ideas for People You Are Connected To

At a networking event, an entrepreneur told me that he wants to get better at messaging people on LinkedIn, but he's at a loss for what to write without sounding stupid. Here are a few suggestions for messages that you can send people.

First message to someone you never spoke to that you have been connected to for a while:

“Looks like we have been connected for a while but we have not communicated yet. Tell me something about yourself that I cannot find on your profile.”

“I am so glad that we are connected on LinkedIn. Let’s get to know each other. Do you have an article about your story that you want me to read?”

“I am grateful that you are my connection. Looking forward to following your updates here on LinkedIn. How often do you update your profile?”

Message to someone you have spoken to before and want to spark a new conversation with:

“Been a while since we last connected. What projects are you working on right now? Would love to see how I can be of value to you.”

“Hope you are well. I'd love to introduce you to some of my relevant contacts. Who do you want to meet?”

“Hey! Long time no speak... Would you be interested in coming to an event with me in the coming weeks?”

“Looks like we haven't chatted in a while. Feel free to send me a video or article that you posted recently so I can catch up on what you're doing.”

Message to someone you want to talk to on the phone but do not want to annoy:

“Been following you on LinkedIn and would love to get to know you better, would you be up for a quick get to know you call in the coming weeks?”

“I just got off the phone with one of my LinkedIn connections. It was so refreshing to get to know someone that I connected with on LinkedIn! Would you like to hop on the phone for a few minutes so we can get to know each other?”

“I read your LinkedIn profile and I have some questions about your business. I would love to speak to you for a few minutes in the next couple of days. Are you available for a quick call?”

Message to someone who can be a great referral partner for you:

“Looks like we might work with the same types of clients. Would you be open with me making some introductions for you to your ideal client?”

“I am looking to build up some referral partners and from the looks of your profile, you might be a great person for me to make some introductions for. Are you open for introductions to people in my network?”

“One of my favorite things to do is to connect people in my network. I'd love to learn more about who your most ideal connections would be so I can connect you. Can you send me who you are targeting so I can look at my network and connect you with some people?”

Message to someone who you just want to be top of mind with and not bother them with any requests:

“Just remembered that we are connected here on LinkedIn and I wanted to say that I appreciate our connection. Wishing you an amazing week!”

“Thanks for being connected to me on LinkedIn. If you ever need anything, please reach out to me. I am pretty active here these days.”

“I just read your profile and I am inspired by what you have accomplished. Thanks for being you!”

“Just dropping a quick message to say thanks for being my connection on LinkedIn. I appreciate you. Hope you have a great day today!”

“Some people make me smile when I look at their photo, you have such great energy about you. Thanks for making my day. Wishing you only good things.”

“I’m sure you are busy; I wanted to send you this message to say THANK YOU for being my connection. Looking forward to your updates.”

“Hey, I appreciate our connection here. If you ever have something you want me to read, send it over. Happy to support you in any way that I can.”
