One of the most underutilized social forums for small businesses and Entrepreneurs is LinkedIn. It is not as familiar as Instagram or Facebook for some which can lead to overwhelm, but believe me when I say, you can create a polished brand and reach a new audience of people if you simply give it a try. Below are tips to create an effective LinkedIn profile that will quickly have you creating a new network for personal and business growth.
- ALWAYS have a photo and utilize one appropriate for your business or career. If you are an attorney, using a beach pic is most likely not the best way to go, BUT if you are a physical trainer then a gym pic or competition photo in a bathing suit would work great.?
- We are visual people, so having a photo makes a big difference. Having a photo with good clarity and a slight smile may be more welcoming to those contacts you are sending link invites to. Think of being approached in a business setting by someone who appears angry and trying to push a business card at you…. Now think of someone approaching you with a smile and hello before handing you their card. It is the same with social media.
- Use a photo or logo in your LinkedIn banner on your home page. One that reflects your brand and will become recognizable. Because we are visual creatures, when we see something that we like, we tend to remember it and associate it with the person or place it represents.
- Complete your profile. This is an online resume/CV and free marketing that is seen by hundreds if not thousands of people. Make it Count. Careers, Awards, Licensing and Certification, Degrees, Volunteer Work, Boards you sit on and Organizations you are part of not only tell others what your strengths are, but what is important to you. Others are more likely to link if there is a common denominator. If you graduated from the same college, are both members of a National organization or volunteer at a food bank, there is common ground before you even meet/speak with them.
- Title- Use a descriptor that is clear and tells a story with your “About” portion of the profile. What is your expertise? What makes you stand apart from others in your field?
- Upload certificates, published writing, awards and other important elements to the “Featured” section of your profile. Back to the visual…. People like to see your name on things that show accomplishments
- Skills are nice to add. Search through and post a minimum of 5 in the “Skills & Endorsements” section. Do not use only those that seem relevant such as legal or claims. Of course, we want to add those, but look at Strategic Planning, Content Development, or other skills you have.
- Send Link Requests with a message introducing yourself. It is much more pleasant to get a note that says “Hello, we have common business associates and I would like to link” or “We share the same industry and I would really like to Link for growth of my network and industry information”.. You get the idea.?
- POST POST POST…. Be consistent with how often you post. At least once a week to stay on the feeds of your LinkedIn network and do not be afraid of hashtags. They can organically grow the viewers and sometimes others who find your feed interesting will send you a Link invite. Use photos, articles, and information that you find interesting or pertains to your work.
- Share others' posts and comment regularly on others’ postings. This shows them that you are interested in what they are saying, they will recognize you and they may begin to share or comment on your posts. That means their links see you and again, you will organically grow.
- Lastly, follow company pages and expand your network beyond your industry. While industry employees may be your clients, people know people who know people. This means the larger the network the more opportunities.
