LinkedIn Jobs on the Rise: Four in-demand roles that don't need degrees

If you’re looking to pivot industries, it helps to know where the jobs are.

After all, Australia’s labour market has changed drastically year on year. As the nation recorded an unprecedented drop in employment, mainstay sectors like tourism, international education and hospitality faced significant challenges. Meanwhile, other industries like healthcare, mining and construction have recorded employment growth.

To help connect people with available opportunities, LinkedIn analysed the data to find which jobs are in demand now — uncovering the fastest-growing job areas over the past.

You can read all 15 Jobs on the Rise for Australia here. In the meantime, I’m sharing four roles that rely on transferrable skills. While you may not envisage yourself as a construction worker or real estate agent, these roles don’t necessarily require a four-year degree.

Construction workers

Construction is the third largest industry in Australia, and with the government keen to stimulate economic recovery through infrastructure spending, this sector is likely to continue growing. The sector has a range of entry level jobs, with vocational training provided.

Top titles: Construction Site Manager, Construction Estimator, Heavy Equipment Operator, Construction Worker, Forklift Operator | Top skills: Construction Estimating, Construction Site Management, Construction Safety, Forklift Operation, Heavy Equipment | Top locations: Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane

Customer service

Customer service workers were often on the frontline through significant disruption in 2020. Workers from hospitality and tourism were able to repurpose their excellent interpersonal and communication skills in this area to understand customer needs and manage complaints.

Top titles: Customer Service Consultant, Customer Assistant, Customer Support Specialist, Customer Contact Representative, Customer Service Specialist | Top skills: Customer Experience, Customer Satisfaction, Communication, Time Management | Top locations: Sydney, Melbourne, Perth

Professional and personal coaches

With many companies freezing hiring the past year due to uncertainties, recruiters have had to pivot, and a significant proportion of recruitment consultants became career development specialists. Top skills for career development specialists are resume writing and recruiting — skills common in recruitment. Recruiters can use this skill set to move from recruiting to helping people find new roles.

Top titles: Life Coach, Health Coach, Business Coach, Career Development Specialist, Leadership Coach | Top skills: Business Coaching, Wellness Coaching, Executive Coaching, Personal Development, Mentoring | Top locations: Sydney, Perth, Melbourne

Real Estate

Despite the economic downturn in 2020, Australia’s property sector remained remarkably upbeat. With low interest rates and the work-from-home revolution, people are moving away from the big cities to find more affordable housing.

Top titles: Mortgage Broker, Real Estate Specialist, New Home Sales Specialist, Real Estate Agent | Top skills: Mortgage Lending, New Home Sales, Residential Real Estate, Investment Properties, Real Estate Transactions | Top locations: Perth, Sydney, Melbourne

Would you consider moving into any of these areas? Let us know in the comments.
