LinkedIn Industry List 2023 - Part 01

LinkedIn Industry List 2023 - Part 01

A. The Industry List Would Be Useful For Whom?

This is one of the most underrated important features of LinkedIn. Most have made a selection without much thought when they first set up their profile and then forget all about it.?

The more intentional of us would have put more thought into it as they change jobs or pivot in their career.?

What many do not realize is the impact it has on their LinkedIn experience. Many of us have one time or another lamented about how boring or irrelevant their LinkedIn feed is and started a whole slew of connecting, disconnecting, following and unfollowing people on LinkedIn.?

This does have an immediate effect on your feed and suggested connections. However, if you are getting suggestions that are less relevant to you, try updating your industry.?

Note that one of LinkedIn's unique selling points for ads is your industry, job title and seniority in your role. These are called "Features" and the algorithm uses them to learn about who you are. These features are very industry relevant.?

In fact, one of the recent suggestions that LinkedIn has on your profile is to have you connect with people from your industry.?

Selecting the right industry in your LinkedIn profile also enables LinkedIn to make better network suggestions to help you grow your network.

Being a platform for professionals to connect and network on, one of LinkedIn's algorithms is built to anticipate with whom you are likely to want to connect and the type of content that you are likely to want to see and engage with.?

?

Your industry input is one of the many "features" that it uses to find and show you content and make suggestions for connections, events and ads based on your likeliness to engage with them. When you engage, the algorithm considers that as a "reward" and attempts to serve you more similar-natured content and connections. ?

B. What Is The LinkedIn Industry List?

The LinkedIn Industry List is a list of industries that LinkedIn curates and updates on the platform annually. It once was a tediously long list with over 500 plus options to choose from. Over the past five years, the curation of the list has been consistently stricter and this resulted in a much more manageable list to choose from.?

Users used to suffer from the inability to choose from the subtle differences between the industry choices. Today, the pain comes from many specialists in niche industries not being able to find an industry choice that they can fully identify with.?

?

Just remember that choosing the right industry is not the end-all of your problems on LinkedIn. It is only one of the million features that the platform is using to better understand who you are and what you might be looking for.?

C. When Should I Update My Industry List?

Listing your industry is not something that you do regularly. While you should regularly update your profile, you would only update your industry selection when

- You first set up your profile

- You move on to a similar role in another industry

- You pivot in your career

D. What Are The Benefits Of Listing The Right Industry On Your Linkedin Profile?

Listing the right industry on your LinkedIn profile can provide several benefits, including:

Improved visibility: When you list the correct industry on your LinkedIn profile, your profile will be more visible to professionals in that industry. This can lead to more profile views, connection requests, and potential job opportunities.

Better networking opportunities: By accurately identifying your industry, you can connect with other professionals in the same industry, attend industry-specific events and join industry-related groups on LinkedIn. This can help you expand your network and make valuable professional connections.

Increased credibility: Listing the correct industry on your LinkedIn profile can help establish you as a credible and knowledgeable professional in that field. This can be especially important when you're looking for new job opportunities or trying to establish yourself as an expert in your industry.

Targeted job opportunities: Many recruiters and hiring managers use LinkedIn to find candidates for job openings. By listing the correct industry on your profile, you increase your chances of being found for job opportunities that match your skills and experience.

Overall, listing the correct industry on your LinkedIn profile can help you establish a strong professional brand, make valuable connections, and open up new opportunities for career growth and development.

The intention of this article is to help save you time and the incredible headache by allowing you to use your industry keywords to identify the active node that covers your industry. Under each active node is a list of industries.?

Each selection comes with its unique?

  • Description

Use the keywords in the description to help you understand the subtle differences between the industry choices and to facilitate your picking an industry that is more relevant to you.

Pick up your annual company report and use ChatGPT or any other similar AI tool to pull out the keywords from the document and use those keywords to search through the industry list below and find the one that best describes what your company does.?

Use either "CMD+F" for Mac users or "CTR+F" for Windows users in this article and start typing in your keywords. You should be able to find the right industry to update your profile.?

Important Side Notes

Two Sets of Industry Codes

There are two sets of industry codes. While many industry leaders use the NAICS, the industry IDs listed on this page are LinkedIn defined and are different from the industry ID available in the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) standards.

LinkedIn is working on aligning its classification system with the NAICS standards at the moment, so you might not find all the industries to be available.

Additionally, on LinkedIn Recruiter and Talent Insights, you might also not find the full list of industry list inside. They are still undergoing the rollout and the update on your application could take some time.

Do note that the industry codes used by advertisers on LinkedIn through Campaign Manager SHOULD match this current list, depending on the application update in your region.

2. Request For An Unlisted Industry

It is possible to contact LinkedIn to request an industry that is currently not yet listed. Search for the following title below on the LinkedIn help server and you will be guided to a page where you can submit a request to LinkedIn’s Product Team on the LinkedIn Developer Support Portal.

https://www.dhirubhai.net/help

"How do I request for my industry to be added in the list by LinkedIn?”

3. Active And Inactive Nodes

Due to the streamlining of the industry codes, some previous codes have been disabled. These can be found under the "Inactive Nodes". Scroll to the bottom of the article to find the deactivated codes.?

4. No Backsies

If you see “Outdated Classification” in your industry field when you are editing your industry profile, it means that your current industry profile has been deactivated and you should select one from the new list. You will not be able to revert back to your previous selection.?
