We all want to get noticed and appreciated on social media. But unlike teenagers, we adults want engagement that leads to monetary rewards. The benefits of increased engagement are huge: more followers equals wider reach, higher social value, paid opportunities, and higher lead conversions.
So what exactly is engagement, how do you measure it and how do you increase it?
Let’s dive in.
What is Engagement?
Engagement describes any interaction with your content.
How Do You Measure Engagement?
Engagement is measured by view count, likes, comments, shares, and reactions.
Linkedin shows you clearly these metrics on your article, video, or post. Everyone can see how many likes, comments, and shares you have but only you can see the total view count. We can also see where your post viewers are located, the companies they work at, and which titles they have. Linkedin doesn’t have a tool to see which type of content did best, like comparing video, posts, or articles. We also can’t see the names of the people who viewed your post due to privacy laws, which devices people viewed your post on, nor does Linkedin provide a tool to show your post or article engagement flow over time to analyze best performing posts or posting times (you have to track this manually or use a third party tool).
How Do You Increase Engagement?
The magic question! I see Linkedin trainings charging over one thousand dollars to teach people how to increase engagement. Obviously there are multiple ways. Today I’m going to give you a few basic tactics, free-of-charge.
1./ Post regularly and follow these posting tips: Ideally two posts daily and space them out. Post when your target audience is online. Make sure your posts are authentic, engaging, and tie into your brand. Don’t share only other people’s articles as those have MUCH lower reach than something you produce. Same think for posts containing external links. That’s a big no-no for Linkedin. Keep your links mostly in a comment since Linkedin algorithm won’t show them to many followers as native content.
2./ Use video. More people are watching on mobile devices and it will stand out in their feed. Don’t know how to start? There are plenty of amazing video creators and coaches on Linkedin to teach you all the tricks!
3./ Master copy writing. This is a not a skill that should be limited to writers. Everyone needs to learn how to write SEO-rich, compelling text in a unique voice. The first sentence has to hook the reader so they keep reading. Learn how to craft amazing titles. Master the art of storytelling. This is MANDATORY in my opinion. If you don’t work on excellent communication, you won’t succeed in business.
4./ Use high quality photography. If you own a business, invest in photo shoots every 3-6 months. People will always pay more attention to a post containing a professionally taken photograph.
5./ Produce beautifully-designed slides. Slides stand out. People want to learn on Linkedin. Slides are a great tool to attract leads and get more engagement on your posts.
6./ Apply for Linkedin Live beta feature. It is currently still in beta and you must apply to be a broadcaster but the payoffs are huge to build an audience.
7./ Make sure your Linkedin profile is amazing. You want an eye-catching profile with clear and consistent messaging and great branding. It will help people find you and attract more people who do to follow you.
8./ Follow popular hashtags. Also, use them strategically to increase the reach of your posts. Just make sure they are relevant to your content or else, this strategy could backfire.
9./ Join Linkedin groups. Post there relevant content to increase engagement. Which groups should you join? Pick the ones of your target audience, of course!
10./ Share all your Linkedin post on Twitter. This is easy in Linkedin. When you create a post, there is an option to share with everyone and Twitter built right in. Over time, this will pay off to drive more traffic to your Linkedin feed since Twitter is a popular tool for business people.
11./ Carefully build a network of really amazing people. Pick people who are active on Linkedin, preferably (but not obligatory) with significant following since that will attract more people to your profile. Their network will see your post when they like it. If you grow for the sake of growing, you will hurt your lead conversion rate in the end. 12./ Tagging. Tag brands, companies, conferences, major events, influencers, celebrities, or anyone that has an audience in its’ own right. Just make sure they are relevant to your content or else, this strategy could backfire.
13./ Start a Linkedin challenge. This is definitely a way to become popular and get noticed. There are some great challenges out there.
14./ Get featured in other people’s posts, videos, or lives. Their audience will see it and start following you too. Collaborations work wonders!
15./ Media and PR. Get some mainstream press published about you and share on your channels.
16./ Accomplishments. Brand yourself with all your accomplishments like Featured in (Major Publication), Awards, Linkedin Voice, etc. Bonus points to add them to your background image for more visibility.
17./ Personalized Hashtag. Create a personalized hashtag and ask people regularly to follow it.
18./ Engagement Groups. Tag or share your posts with a core group of 20-30 people who are also very active on Linkedin and always support you. Ideally these are people who also have great profiles and a good following.
19./ Engage with Comments. Like and reply to comments on your post in a timely manner. The Linkedin algorithm likes that.
20./ Bring Your Audience to Linkedin. Build an audience outside of Linkedin and bring them with you. I’ve seen many successful people do this and their profile explodes almost overnight. By the way, you can use this strategy for any social media platform. Example: Build a following on Instagram and then get them to follow you on Youtube or other platforms.
21./ Major Events. Attend major conferences and blog about it on Linkedin using the conference hashtag and tagging the speakers. This can draw a lot of traffic to your profile since there is already an audience interested in that event.
I could continue but I’ll stop here. Maybe I’ll post another article with advanced tactics if there is interest (comment below "More Tips!"). Let me know in the comments please if you have tried any of these tactics and how they have worked for you. Also, are there any tips you’ve found effective that I missed? I love hearing from you!
