LinkedIn Is Not Facebook! A 3 minutes read.

LinkedIn Is Not Facebook! A 3 minutes read.

Just to be clear - I like all kind of social platforms. I really do and I also know it is very hard to keep up with each platform, so I made my mistakes as well… still learning.

Today after seeing too many "non-professional" posts on LinkedIn I somehow felt obliged to share my view with you.

Recommendation No. 1

Whatever you post, you post the same on all platforms because it's convenient and fast – WRONG.

Please check your content and depending on what it is, you choose which platform you will use. It's possible to post the same on different platforms (twitter+linkedin or linkedin+googleplus dedicated account or facebook+pinterest or Instagram+facebook etc.) – again depending on what it is.

Recommendation No. 2

As we want to say the same thing, we communicate the same on every social platform – WRONG.

As all various platforms also attract different type of user/community, you need to communicate in a different way in each platform – facebook communication needs to be more direct and funky to attract your user/community.

It is important to say that Facebook is more Human to Human (H2H), consumer to consumer (C2C) and also business to consumer (B2C).

LinkedIn is purely for the business to business (B2B) relationships.

Please don’t get me wrong, funny pictures make me laugh and I really like seeing people doing crazy things as well - I don’t want to miss them ON FACEBOOK.

But when I log into my LIN account I'm focused on business, I would like to read something that helps me getting better, I want to learn something (constructive discussions, educative videos) – of course it can be creative and motivating, but still it has a business related angle. We can have a laugh on LinkedIn – no issue with that – as long it is intelligent and entertaining.

So please stop posting ON LINKEDIN your holiday pictures, your meal during lunchtime, your baby or cat photos, silly math problems… I'm really shocked seeing the responses and likes on those! And finally leave the Sudoku for the paper please.

For all those who disagree please let me know – I'm more than happy to "unfriend and deconnect" on LinkedIn – and move that over to facebook & Co.

Thank you.

Best

Andy

The fact that one discovers people's cats and their food in a LinkedIn article is proof that these articles get clicked WAY more often than serious articles. I've experienced this myself. I've written quite a few (hopefully useful) articles in my specialist area (i.e. databases and data management). Yes, I get a few clicks and a couple of comments. BUT then I posted a fun article about Qantas's Bizarre Complimentary Drink Policy. Honestly, this is not business-related, however, it generated thousands of views and many many responses. Another example I posted included a picture comparing Ethereum's (a blockchain technology) logo to the evil Leviathan in Hellraiser 2, the movie. Not business-related at all really. BUT again, it got interest. Maybe after a hard day's work, people don't really want to engross themselves in a serious and long article but rather choose something witty, funny, inflammatory (human nature is curious) or plain downright offensive.

Thanks Andy, I'm doing a LinkedIn seminar next week. You've just reminded me to add the sentence, "If you post a picture of your food on LinkedIn, you'd better be a caterer."

Thanks for sharing, Andy. These are exactly my thoughts. With all these articles it is very difficult to extract the real content on LinkedIn. Especially if you have a lot connections all over the globe...

That's a really great read here, Andy. You should push this and maybe become a social media consultant! :-)
