LinkedIn Branding is a Team Sport

Scroll the LinkedIn feed for ten minutes, and you will get so many varied opinions on branding. Conventional wisdom seems to champion the strategy of 'divide and conquer.' You would be forgiven for thinking that personal branding is the only solution. Oh wait, employer branding is hot. Forget that and focus on building a company brand. Does it make your head spin?
It's been playing on my mind a lot lately, as this never aligns with the reality of what I know it takes to attract opportunities for B2B businesses on LinkedIn. It certainly doesn't align with my 20+ years working in B2B industries. None of these elements of branding is mutually exclusive. They all have an impact on each other.
United We Brand. Divided We Fall.
Picture, in your mind, your favourite sporting team. It doesn't matter which sport the team plays or at what level. For the sake of this article, I'm going to use football/soccer as it is a global game, and recently I've been really enjoying watching Ted Lasso.
Within the team, you have distinct players: the defenders, midfielders, strikers, and of course, the goalkeeper. Each player has a unique role and a personal skillset they bring to the pitch, much like the various components of branding – personal, employer, employee, and company branding.
In a successful football/soccer team, you never have these roles operating in isolation. A striker may be the one scoring the goals, but they're supported by the midfielders feeding them the ball, the defenders maintaining the backbone of the team's structure, and the goalkeeper, the last line of defence. They move as one, a seamless entity working towards a common goal: victory.
This is precisely the game plan needed for effective B2B branding. It's not about isolating your efforts, focusing solely on employer branding when recruitment is the priority, or personal branding for boosting individual leaders' profiles. It's about aligning these efforts, creating a strategy where each form of branding supports the other, moving together in formation towards the company's objectives.
Consider your employees: they're not just workers; they're midfielders and your playmakers. When they understand their role in the bigger picture, they perform better. They pass the ball; they create opportunities. They set up the company for the win. Employee advocacy in action is a crucial play that can only happen when there's understanding and cohesion in your branding strategy.
Winning LinkedIn Branding Strategy
But remember, a team's formation isn't static; it evolves based on the opponent, the stakes, and the state of the pitch. Similarly, your branding strategy will shift based on current goals, resources, and the market environment.
This is why B2B GROWTH CO - Get Your Business Active on LinkedIn?? for Growth doesn't offer group training programs. There is no one-size-fits-all strategy. We work with our clients to devise the best combination of our services to meet the business where it is at and bring the best out in everyone. It could be any combination of LinkedIn for B2B G.R.O.W.T.H foundational training, LinkedIn Profile Recharges, B2B Audit and Strategy sessions or Company Page Admin Training.

We will tailor a strategy to create your LINKEDIN DREAM TEAM! A well-oiled machine unit where the company's success is everyone's success. The moment we start isolating our branding efforts, we break formation, create gaps in our defence, and risk losing the match.
A harmonious, collaborative effort, with everyone pushing forward in their roles, and supporting each other, is what takes the company into the champions' league of your industry.
This kind of branding doesn't just score goals; it wins championships.

1 年It is a team sport. In rugby union football we have backs that run up the field and forwards that disable runners. It's like LinkedIn? in a way. We have backs (Profiles) that ran far. We have Pages (forwards - some of them are extremely obese, even in regional professional teams). They don't run so far, but the work of the forwards allows the teeny tiny Half Back role to grab the ball, scan the field and redirect the play.

1 年Thank you Michelle J Raymond for sharing. I liked the point "The moment we start isolating our branding efforts, we break formation, create gaps in our defence, and risk losing the match." I need to figure out how to do that with a one man team. I have been bing watching your youtube channel. Thank you.
