Starting on LinkedIn can feel like walking into a party where everyone already knows each other. You might be standing on the sidelines, unsure how to join the conversation. But the good news? You don’t have to be the loudest person in the room to make an impact.
In this guide, we’ll walk through three key steps to help you get off the sidelines, build confidence, and most importantly, take action on LinkedIn.
This article is inspired by the recent episode of the Social Media for B2B Growth Podcast hosted by Michelle J Raymond, which discusses this topic in more detail.

1. Master Your Mindset
If your mindset isn’t right, every LinkedIn tip and strategy will go in one ear and out the other. You’ll stay stuck, paralysed by fear and trust me, you’re not alone.
I’ve been on LinkedIn for over a decade, creating content for myself, my clients, and corporates worldwide. And guess what? I still experience those fears. Fear of being judged, fear of not being good enough, and fear of letting people down.
But here’s the thing: most people posting on LinkedIn feel the same way. The difference? They take action despite those fears.
Common LinkedIn Fears (And How to Overcome Them)
Fear of judgment – “What if people don’t like what I post?”
Instead of letting fear control you, reframe your mindset. LinkedIn isn’t about you; it’s about who you can help. When you focus on serving others, those fears start to fade.
2. Optimise Your LinkedIn Profile
So, you’ve got your mindset sorted. Now, before you start engaging on LinkedIn, check your profile. It’s your digital first impression. Make it count.
Quick LinkedIn Profile Audit
? Profile photo – Is it recent? Can people clearly see your face?
? Cover image – Does it reflect your brand or industry? If not, use a Canva template to create one.
? Headline – Does it say what you do and who you help? (Hint: 'Job Title at Company' isn’t enough!)
? About section – Does it tell your story and highlight what makes you different?
? Work experience – Is it up to date?
If your profile doesn’t reflect who you are and what you do, take the time to update it. You don’t want to cringe when people check it out after you start engaging!
3. Take Small but Consistent Actions
Many beginners freeze at the thought of creating content. But guess what? You don’t have to start there. Small actions build confidence and momentum.
1. Send connection requests – Start with people you know: colleagues, industry peers, and customers.
2. Engage with posts – If you see something interesting, hit the like button.
3. Comment on posts – Share your thoughts or ask a question (this is where the magic happens!).
Once you’re comfortable engaging, you’re ready to post.
What to Include in Your First LinkedIn Post
Your first post doesn’t have to be complicated. Just introduce yourself!
Bonus Tip: Tag Me!
If you’re feeling brave, tag me in your first post. I’ll be your biggest cheerleader!
Final Thoughts
Taking your first steps on LinkedIn can feel overwhelming, but remember:
If you’re feeling stuck or need help, reach out. I love helping beginners find their feet on LinkedIn. And if you’re responsible for employees, think about how you can support them in taking action too.
Now, it’s over to you. What’s your biggest LinkedIn challenge in getting started? Let me know in the comments!
