LinkedIn Article: The State of the Pakistani IT Industry By Yaqoot Kashif

As a professional in the IT sector, I feel compelled to share my observations about the current state of the Pakistani IT industry. While there is undeniable potential and talent within our workforce, the industry seems to be plagued by a troubling trend: a focus on greed and superficial success rather than genuine quality and innovation.

The Quest for Skills Over Specialization

One of the most frustrating aspects of the hiring process in Pakistan is the unrealistic expectations placed on candidates. Companies often seek "jacks of all trades" who possess a multitude of skills across various domains, rather than valuing deep expertise in a specific area. This approach not only dilutes the quality of work but also creates an environment where employees feel pressured to stretch themselves thin, often leading to burnout and dissatisfaction.

A Culture of Superficiality

It’s disheartening to witness how many organizations prioritize flashy presentations and superficial metrics over meaningful contributions. The focus seems to be on what looks good on paper rather than what truly drives success. When employees present innovative ideas or solutions, they are often met with skepticism or indifference, especially if those ideas challenge the status quo. If a concept is not immediately understood, the response is often a polite "thank you," rather than an invitation for further discussion or exploration.

A Comparison with Global Standards

In contrast, countries like the United States and Japan foster environments where employees are supported and encouraged to grow. In these regions, companies invest in their workforce, providing opportunities for professional development and valuing creativity. The emphasis is on collaboration and innovation, which ultimately leads to a more successful and satisfied workforce.

The Reality of the Pakistani IT Landscape

Unfortunately, the narrative in Pakistan often revolves around a "slave-like" mentality, where employees are expected to conform to outdated practices and ideas. The industry seems to generate a workforce that is compliant but not necessarily happy or fulfilled. This leads to a cycle of mediocrity, where companies are more interested in replicating stolen ideas rather than fostering new creativity.

A Call for Change

It’s time for the Pakistani IT industry to reevaluate its priorities. We need to shift our focus from greed and superficial success to genuine quality and innovation. Companies should recognize the value of specialization and invest in their employees' growth. By fostering a culture of support and creativity, we can transform our industry into one that not only competes globally but also nurtures its talent.

Let’s work together to create a thriving IT ecosystem that values quality, innovation, and the well-being of its workforce.
