LinkedIn turned 20 May 5th this year
And there have been some changes in 20 years. Were you an early or late adopter?
Have you shifted your mindset from an "online resume" to a networking and business development tool?
Some of the changes have happened subtly over time. Some are more dramatic. To get you up to speed, here is?LinkedIn by the #s
To start you off with some important context, take a look at the diagram above. LinkedIn is considered a very?small?platform. Most of the time, when I'm looking for stats, LinkedIn is not included as Social Media. A little bit of an identity crisis there.?
LinkedIn?IS?the only B2B Social Media platform. And it's very close the 1 Billion mark.
(The above chart came out 3 months before Threads, so the Twitter data is likely wrong, and Threads isn't included.)
FB and YouTube are about 3Xs larger than LI.?
57.2% identify as Male and 42.8% as Women
LinkedIn ads reach 1/3 of men ages 25 - 34. Keep that in mind when running ads. 1 - 2% reach those over 55 years old.
Less than 25% of daily LinkedIn Users are in the U.S. It is truly a Global Platform.?
Less than 1% share content 5 days/week
The average # of connections is 1000
39% of U.S. users have one of the Premium versions
3 people/minute join LinkedIn. That hasn't changed in about 5 years.
Here's the shocker -?
60% of users are age 25 - 34.?
Pre-pandemic, 30 - 40% of the activity in the newsfeed was Boomers. They kept things clean. During the pandemic, they disappeared.?
Your individual network will not be a representation of all of LI. It will be primarily people 5 - 10 years older and 5 - 10 years younger than you.?
Food for thought, do you want to work with Gen Z? How are you going to reach them??
Like it or not, they are 60% of LinkedIn.?
I have been following the stats and demographics of LinkedIn for over a decade. About a decade ago, the median annual earnings were $120,000. Pre-pandemic is slipped to $85,000. Now it is $75,000. Not quite half. Disturbing.?

98% of members have post-secondary education
69% of the 200 million U.S. users are active daily
80% of users are either decision-makers or decision influencers
Of users 16 - 64 years old
I think the demographics and the shifts are fascinating. To a marketer, it's all important. I like a big-picture view and being able to make informed decisions.?
Much of this info I presented at BACN in May. You can watch that?presentation here ?if you are interested. The second half is all best practices for business development on LinkedIn. It's not quite 42 minutes.?
I have lots of ideas about these demographics and how they evolved. I shared a small amount. If you are curious about how they affect your business, let's have a conversation. I get pretty geeky about this stuff!?
Use this info to your best advantage.
Until next time...?

1 年Are Boomers leaving LinkedIn (beyond retirements)? Are they going somewhere else or doing less social media? I have many friends who are spending a lot more time on Instagram, but they're not doing it for work.
