The article from Engadget discusses how Meta, the parent company of Instagram, appears to be developing new generative AI features for Instagram. These features include labels that allow creators to identify images that were "generated by Meta AI". This information was revealed through screenshots shared by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi, who often teases unreleased features from Meta's apps.
The screenshots show an in-app message explaining how posts created with generative AI tools may soon be labeled within Instagram. The labels would indicate that the content was created or edited with AI, and that it was "generated by Meta AI". The aim is to make it easier for users to discern when AI was used to create content, especially as generative AI tools become more widely used.
This move comes amidst concerns raised by researchers and policymakers about how AI technology could be used to spread misinformation or mislead people. Earlier in the month, seven AI companies, including Meta, pledged to adopt a series of AI safety measures, such as watermarks for AI-generated content.

While Meta has not disclosed many details about its consumer-facing generative AI plans, CEO Mark Zuckerberg has hinted at building new products using the Llama model that will work across their services. These could include creative tools for sharing content, AI assistants, and tools for interacting with businesses and creators.
Additionally, Paluzzi has spotted signs of other generative AI-powered tools for Instagram, such as a "message summary" feature for summarizing long DMs, and new artistic tools for editing Stories. However, a spokesperson for Meta declined to comment on these developments.
