Linguistic skills for GRE/GMAT ???

Linguistic skills for GRE/GMAT ???

Wells that is something that worries most of the non-native GRE/GMAT takers. Its true that the Verbal Section for Both the Exams take a heavy proficiency test and also the only reason the Score Tanks BUT is it the test of English language?

Let's Understand what's in it that bothers most and what's the way out.

?? Reading Comprehension - Both GRE and GMAT have this section where you basically read a passage picked from business, Social science, humanities, science etc. and answer a set of questions. The questions basically test your ability to get to the gist of the writeup, evaluate and infer, that's it. You need to be someone who can read and write NOT someone with a background in literature or social science. What is being tested has nothing to do with your linguistic skill but your ability to comprehend and connect the Dots logically.

?? Critical Reasoning - Both GRE and GMAT have this section. The ask is your logical reasoning ability to deduce arguments. NOT linguistic skills. A super scoring section only if you know the trick to crack this.

?? Sentence Equivalence and Text Completion - Only GRE has this section. Gone are the synonyms and antonyms that played a role in GRE a decades back, I still wonder why some prep houses put too much emphasis on this typical rote business. I call it nothing but a waste of time. Then what's being tested in this TC and SE section? The answer again is your Logical reasoning ability to decipher the arguments and build a coherent sentence. Ah! you might argue here that then why those words, 3000 plus? I say at max 1000 words that one must know, that's it. And if you check its 200 odd words with 4-5 synonyms. So no big challenge that way, anyone can score a 100% in this section.

?? ?? So, now if you say that you have studied in an English medium school or an Arts grad with an English major then will that help? My answer is Not much. Yes it helps if your spectrum of non fiction reading is very wide and for that you don't need to major in English. The ASK is simple - Logic not language.

Another crucial aspect weather you are a not so comfortable with reading and abstruse topics & they befuddle you, that's true for anyone taking GRE/GMAT, as topics of RC range from Arts to Science. All that's required is a good quality prep and using a few simple techniques an ace score in RC is no impossible task.

One word of caution - If the very sight of WORDS gets you panting and gasping. Better tread keeping in mind the extra bit of work you need to chip-in to Ace the test.

Proficiency in English lang for GRE/GMAT ??? My foot.... ??
