Startup Lessons Learned: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Building Tech Leadership Lab is like building a bootstrapped tech startup with volunteers. It's a wild ride, but it's also incredibly rewarding.
Unfortunately, unexpected challenges can arise at any moment. On Monday, I had to make the decision to cancel our regular Wednesday live event, meaning today, due to a pileup of startup-like situations. I didn't want to put too much pressure on myself or the team, so I decided to hit the pause button and say, "Next time."
On top of that, last week's newsletter didn't land in everyone's emails. This was a huge disappointment, as it's one of the main reasons people subscribe to LinkedIn newsletters. Well, it's one of the reasons I launched the newsletter on LinkedIn.
In case you got it, please say so in a comment. We didn't, Ken and I. Whatever the cause, it affected our audio event attendance and caused some notification issues.
LinkedIn couldn't find the root cause of the problem without full access to my account, which I wasn't comfortable sharing. I'm hopeful that this edition of the newsletter will land in everyone's inbox without issue. Please share it with your colleagues and friends!
Last week's edition: Intentional Living
Last minute update!
Today's Tech Leadership Lab event won't happen, but you can see me LIVE a bit later than our usual events, at 11:45 PST, 14:45 PM EST, also on LinkedIn, and this time on video at Conversations For Humanity with host Chris Berryman .
You should come and join us. As the title suggests it's aligned with what we are building here and for sure with my values and mission.
LinkedIn Algorithm Changes on the Rise!?
In the meantime of all these, I've noticed that views and impressions have drastically declined for several influencers and top authorities on LinkedIn. I've seen this happen to my own posts as well, but at least my engagement is still high. It seems that LinkedIn is making some significant algorithmic changes under the hood.
Anything to comment on? I would love to know your observations.
Enough of the bad news! Let's bring it back to the great news and an unexpected announcement.
????♂? Good to know: The number of centenarians (people who live to be 100 years old or older) is increasing rapidly. In the United States, there were just 30,000 centenarians in 1960. Today, there are over 70,000. And that number is expected to reach 1 million by 2050.
The reasons are multifaceted like improved sanitation and hygiene, vaccination, better nutrition, advanced healthcare, and changes in lifestyle and behavior. According to new research, we should be able to reverse aging by 2045.
Announcement!
Tech Leadership Lab Newsletter reached over 1000 subscribers last week, just six weeks after launch!?
Thank you all! 30% of our subscribers united could already change the world. Keep close because eventually, your time will come.
Predictability decreases engagement, so it won't be the case here.
The 1000's subscriber would be the predictable winner of the accolades. It gets a sincere, 'Thank you!' The same, "Thank you! goes to all of you, the dearest subscribers who are truly appreciated. You'll get great value and all active members will have unimaginable opportunities in the future. You'll see...
Now, for today, the reward goes to our 999th subscriber. This is such a great number. The number 999 is powerful and significant in many cultures and belief systems. It is often associated with completion, new beginnings, and spiritual enlightenment. Plus, it looks cool.
No more, suspense. The 'Oskar' goes to Dhee Matta , Head of Ad Monetization at Outfit7 Limited in Cyprus. Dheeraj, cool things are happening for you! As a special reward, I'm offering you the following:
As someone in Ads, I believe this will be a great gift. I hope you'll take advantage of this opportunity!
The Limitless Possibilities of Generative AI
Generative AI is transforming the way we create, design, and innovate.
I'm not the most organized person you know, even though I learned discipline from Jim Rohn, but I am an avid life learner. My work ethic when it comes to learning and evolving has no limits. I have three hours a day to learn new things on a daily basis, including weekends. That's why I have such a crazy profile.
Thus, yesterday I tuned in to the HAI Signature Fall event: New Horizons in Generative AI: Science, Creativity, and Society.
[HAI stands for Stanford University's Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence.]
The event goes on for the entire week with multiple topics on the agenda that you can check here.
I was really curious to see what speeches were getting traction at Stanford and to align myself with things I didn't know.
?? Fasting tips:
Responsibility for Pioneers
It was enlightening to see that the first speech focused on the message of responsibility for pioneers, delivered by Shakir Mohamed from Google DeepMind, who then pressed the message by reminding us of Noam Chomsky's essay "The Responsibility of Intellectuals."
This message is perfectly aligned with Tech Leadership Lab, where the emphasis falls on having the right leaders to rule and decide over impactful issues that lead to solutions for all those problems from hunger to gender inequality.
I learned that:

Not sure if you noticed, but that's pretty obvious if we use any weather app. When it comes to rain, you might be soaked wet and your app still shows good weather.
The Need for a Sociotechnical Foundation
A special focus was on ensuring that social and technical aspects are both considered and should be mutually reinforcing to ensure we don't blow up a sociotechnical foundation. This understanding that social and technical aspects are always interacting is needed for generative AI.
With such a set of rules, we can assure an AI that won't go independently but keep a constant eye on what's happening around.
In my view, and maybe the biggest concern, is to make sure that in our pursuit of the almighty AGI, we are making sure that the AI is trained on all relevant data, including all cognitive human biases throughout history that led to primitive acts and a lot of destruction.
An AGI well equipped with the data it needs to assess the good and bad about humans and their actions is a good promise land to reach the best decision that can solve all problems and create a better world.
Data sharing for the public is crucial to keep the advancements and get a comprehensive AI, leveling the field and reducing inequality between countries and ethnicities.
Creativity is another example of the complexity that provides the perfect. Using such an approach can open a new level of human work to enrich our public memory and open us up to ask more complex questions.
Having an accurate public memory could bring the needed humility and rigor to our work and next steps.
Do We Know Enough about Communication?
The Secret Language of Whales speech by Pratyusha Sharma opened with a scene from the movie Arrival, where a linguist works with the military to communicate with alien lifeforms.
Pratyusha points out very eloquently that we have many species on this earth that we don't understand from a communication stand of view. Project CETI is dedicated to understanding the communication of sperm whales where generative AI plays a crucial role in advance.
Imagine understanding at least the more evolved species on Earth. Finding a way for AI to decode, give structure, and translate what they are communicating.
Evolutionary Scale Language Models by Alex Rives
Alex is a computer scientist, focused on Language Models for Biology. He points out the importance of understanding proteins that might solve many challenges we are facing today.
For those of you who don't know, humans are protein-producing organisms. Proteins are made up of amino acids, which are the building blocks of life. They are the most abundant organic molecules in the human body, accounting for about 15-20% of total body weight.
Now we have a large dataset of predicted protein structures (over 617M structures). This can be huge for our biological evolution.
????♂? Good to know: There are 20 different amino acids that are used to make proteins in the human body. Humans can produce 11 of these amino acids, but the other 9 amino acids must be obtained from food. These 9 amino acids are known as essential amino acids.
Sources of protein include meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy products, legumes, and nuts. It is important to consume a variety of protein sources to ensure that the body is getting all of the essential amino acids that it needs.
The speeches continued and we heard Chris Donahue talking about the advancements in music technology and how you can make people listen to more music. There is a staggering recent progress in generative music foundation models.
What's interesting though is that narrow models are having more real-world impact. Meaning, source separation between instruments and playing them solo to be able to remix them in any way.
Computer vision and graphics presented by Angjoo Kanazawa bring the topic of memories and experiences that can be created or recreated from memory.
There are many new tools and we are getting faster ahead to render reality and recreate it any way we want.
I'll let you watch the following speeches from Chess Strategies and Flexibility to teach super-human chess strategies with Lisa Schut, to What We Really Want with Ge Wang, new ways to simulate human behavior in fully generative computational agents with Joon Park, and more.
Conclusion
The future of generative AI is amazing and we can only grasp the limitless possibilities. But as soon as we adjust and learn new ways by unleashing another degree of creativity everything will shift and exponentially change.
