Like a Sack of Gold
Written in the sunshine, played out in the moonlight,
Everything that is bright, all that will fall in line,
Sonnets sung without rhyme, words that never seem right,
Images singe our sight, dreams from another time,
Once knew verse to be shared, yet left it on the porch,
My ardor as a torch, fizzled ere first it flared,
Your eyes so wide and scared, while my lode stone did scorch,
Sitting under that arch, your decision I dared,
Aboard my ketch to sail, dive where porpoise do swim,
Where coral grows, not dim, where frolics the sperm whale,
Beneath is Hades’ jail, where Poseidon so grim,
Presides over each limb, battens down with dark nail.
Oh, to avoid clutches, terrors he bears toward us,
Turn stern, construct a truss, build a span that bridges,
Swat biting sand midges, even while I do cuss,
Our situation thus, cringing in our britches,
Clouds grow on the skyline, winds blow across the sea,
As ebon as steeped tea, throats filling full of brine,
Surprised as by new wine, sweetening tongues with glee,
As honey from the bee, I am yours, you are mine,
Cross over flowing stream, join me on farther side,
On the moonlight we’ll ride, catching every beam,
Journey into new dream, rising higher on tide,
My muse, you are my guide, together we will gleam,
At moonset we shall sleep, our horizon shall glow,
While freshly fallen snow, covers us six feet deep,
Frozen in time we’ll sleep, as lovers who do know,
Our life is like a show, one that we cannot keep.
