We are excited to share groundbreaking research that sheds light on the connection between high-quality sleep and resilience to depression and anxiety. Conducted by researchers at the University of York, this study explores how coping strategies and sleep can significantly influence mental health outcomes, particularly in the face of chronic stress.
Chronic stress has long been recognized as a significant risk factor for various mental health disorders, including depression and pathological anxiety. However, this study emphasizes that adopting positive coping strategies, such as reframing situations to focus on the positive side, along with prioritizing high-quality sleep, can serve as powerful buffers against poor mental health outcomes during negative or stressful experiences.
The research delved into data collected from over 600 participants during the challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020—an extended and globally stressful time. The objective was to examine how coping strategies and sleep quality interact to influence mental health during such real-world chronic stressors.
Emma Sullivan, a Ph.D. student from the Department of Psychology at the University of York, shared her insights, "The COVID-19 pandemic provided a unique context for our research questions, as it has been a prolonged period of stress for people worldwide.
This study is the first of its kind to explore the impact of positive coping strategies and sleep quality on depression and anxiety during such a challenging time. The findings revealed that better sleep quality was associated with fewer symptoms of both depression and anxiety in the initial months of the pandemic."
"These findings underscore the importance of addressing both positive coping strategies and sleep quality when navigating periods of chronic stress," she added.

The research analyzed data from the Boston College Daily Sleep and Well-being Survey, where participants regularly reported on their sleep quality and mental well-being during the pandemic. Additionally, participants provided baseline demographic information, including age, gender, and ethnicity. The surveys also collected data on other factors such as alcohol consumption, quarantine status, and physical activity levels.
Dr. Scott Cairney, a Ph.D. supervisor from the Department of Psychology at the University of York, shared his insights, saying, "High-quality sleep has long been associated with better health and well-being outcomes. However, we wanted to understand how this relationship might evolve under intense and prolonged stress, as experienced by many during the pandemic."
The results of the study demonstrated that sleep plays a crucial role in managing chronic stress and sustaining overall well-being over extended periods, effectively reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety.
