Last year we sat down to brainstorm a way we could raise funds for local charities through the use of our holiday lights display which Vince & Associates has hosted for 10 years. We came up with the title, Lights for Charity, and then added a website into the mix (www.lightsforcharity.org). We also selected two worthwhile charities in Kansas City metro area, Children’s Mercy (a non-profit children’s hospital) and Make-A-Wish (granting wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses).
We quickly determined that we did not want to pressure any one and merely focused on gathering donations. We did so in a passive manner stationing volunteers at the primary entrance/exit of the parking lot across the street where most of the public watched our display. We posted signage and handed out flyers asking people to help support our cause.
Our first season in 2014-2015, we collected $8000 which was phenomenal for such a campaign in its first year. This year we did a few things different by adding more weekdays during the holidays which helped tremendously as we normally only focused on collecting on the weekends.
I want to thank all 54 volunteers that spent a grand total 168 hours collecting donations from a more than generous public.
When it was all said and done, we had collected in-person and online donations of $11,745.00 which we divided between the two organizations. I can’t even say how excited I was at surpassing last year’s numbers and even topping our $10,000 goal for this year. I want to thank all 54 volunteers that spent a grand total 168 hours collecting donations from a more than generous public. Without our volunteers’ time, dedication and assistance along with the philanthropic generosity of the Kansas City community we would have never reached this goal.
THANK YOU KANSAS CITY!
