Lightnovo miniRaman Power 785nm: determining spectral resolution

This article describes the procedure of testing spectral resolution of a Raman spectrometer on an example of Lightnovo ApS miniRaman Power 785nm spectrometer.

Lightnovo ApS miniRaman Power is a compact handheld device providing high sensitivity, excellent signal to noise ratio, and good spectral resolution. The range of applications of miniRaman spans from in-the-field detection of substances to research in an R&D lab.

ASTM E2529 – 06(2014) standard defines calcite as a reference sample for testing the spectral resolution of a Raman spectrometer. Raman spectrum of calcite was acquired with 785 nm laser of a Lightnovo ApS miniRaman Power spectrometer under following conditions: 250 ms exposure, 10 repetitions.

We perform a fit of 1085 cm-1 calcite Raman line to Voigt function which is a convolution of Gaussian and Lorentzian lineshapes.

1085 cm-1 calcite Raman line and Voigt fit

Full width half maximum determined from Voigt fit is 7.43 cm-1. The spectral resolution of the miniRaman spectrometer is then determined using the formula from the ASTM standard:

s_resolution = ( FWHM_calcite_1085 - 0.684 ) / 1.0209

which gives 6.61 cm-1 spectral resolution as a result.

As a conclusion, miniRaman offers excellent spectral resolution for a handheld spectrometer.
