The Fourth of July, usually associated with fireworks, could spark?a few of its own as the date for the UK’s next General Election.? ?
Opposition parties, journalists and even a fair few of his own MPs were caught on the hop by the Prime Minister’s announcement.? Cue the sound of leaflets being printed?and holidays to Tuscany being hastily rebooked.
For political nerds, there’s already plenty of ingredients in the pot – old hands stepping down, Rwanda flights, defections, second home scandals, Scotland school holidays - to make for a spicy six weeks of campaigning.
What’s perhaps been less well publicised is that seats for hundreds of candidates remain empty, Labour by up to 100 and Conservatives by a whopping 190. Anyone standing will need to be hastily vetted, but introducing so many fresh faces adds further flavour?to the mix.
The weather – the equivalent of a political drubbing so far this year – could yet play its part by influencing the number of boats that cross the Channel, potentially?undermining Rishi Sunak’s flagship promise.
There’s also the Euros, with polling day falling between the last 16 and quarter-final stages. It won’t really come down to how well England does in the football will it? Will it?
No two elections are ever the same. But there’s still plenty ahead to be swayed by, as Harold Macmillan famously said, “events, dear boy, events.”?
