Lighting Design for now and the future – Digital Lighting.

Is the future of lighting and displays already here?
Yes it is. But are we embracing a new way of expressing the lighting to reflect the situation it is in?
New lighting or digital lighting, creates lighting that is so adaptable and forward thinking that the possibilities really are endless. Lighting must be about creating a feeling and helping the user be empowered to achieve. This new lighting style will create a vision for the future that is not just about how much energy it uses, but more and more about helping the user emotionally grow and feel better. The right lighting design will enable a company to use it in different creative ways, this will get noticed and help with brand recognition.
It seems to be a continuing pattern that the installation of a new lighting design falls flat, schemes are not always installed to the design or are being installed in a way, which is the same as previous installation, no thought of what the light needs to do or how it is considered in the space. I often hear the phrase “that’s how we have always done it” which really is no excuse for lighting that continues not to consider the user and what task they are trying to perform. I had the opportunity to go into a building recently and saw that the service team had thought that by changing the existing fittings to LED would be good enough, but they were just replacing fittings and the location and colour of the light was being ignored, it is just replacing a scheme that was not designed for the particular use in the first place. The corridors were lit in such a way that they had become really oppressive and as this is an educational establishment, it was damping the student enthusiasm and creating a negative feeling. I worked on an event with them and the difference in attitude was amazing by just creating lighting that was encouraging for them.
Digital lighting is a style that will enable feelings and encourage the user to perform better, it can change very easily to adapt to the needs of the user, if it is in a residence or workplace. New digital lighting will save energy/costs, be better for everyone and the environment, is able to change colour, direction and style depending on the need, one fitting will complete the task of several others so reducing the cost of installation and equipment.
Do you own or are a member of a project team for a hotel or resort, office, retail unit, leisure facility, commercial premises, education, health, infrastructure or a living space, then please look to the future and have a lighting design that can help you or your clients be positive in the future. The same/old style of lighting is no longer acceptable the future is here so please make sure that lighting will help us live better lives.
Contact me to have a lighting scheme that will be right for your project, I do not supply any equipment for any project. I design schemes that are right for the location and create the right feeling for the users, wherever they are in the world.
I am Chris Watts of Chris Watts Lighting Design, a lighting design practice, and I have been designing lighting schemes for over 40 years. I am an advocate of real lighting design that creates emotional responses to spaces and situations. Please contact me for more information.
