SK Telecom is trying to determine whether a telco can also become an AI superpower. The South Korean company, which has vowed to put AI at the center of its business, has just given a vision of its first big commercial AI product, A. (pronounced A-dot), due to be released later this year.

Imagine if Europe had a borderless telecom market, the connectivity equivalent of the Schengen Area that allows people to cruise past snoozing officials at checkpoints. Mobile customers could roam as freely as wildlife, avoiding the surcharges they previously incurred to use their gadgets abroad. Operators, not liking this, would at least know rules are the same from one country to another. Four or five big groups might emerge, able to procure equipment for networks across the region.
India’s Vodafone Idea gets a government assist
The Indian government has finally picked up a 33% stake in Vodafone Idea, India's third-largest service provider, becoming the third largest shareholder in the company. Clearly, this is a positive development for the telco, which has been struggling to pay off its massive debt of R2.2 trillion Indian rupees (US$26.6 billion) as of September 2022. However, the delay of 15-16 months since the time the government had decided to pick up a stake has cost the company dearly.
