There Will Be Light (Part 3)
Isaac Dixon, PhD. SHRM-SCP
Executive Vice President and Interim Chief People Officer
It seemed fitting this morning that here in Portland Oregon it is raining. The heavens often reflect what the heart is feeling and this morning given the events of this week my heart weeps. I think of and offer a prayer for the people of Dallas who have to be struck numb by the insane acts of those who attacked members of their police department last night.
Nothing in this world is more painful than losing fathers, sons, husbands or daughters who went to work protecting others only to lose their lives. Please know that people all across America are praying for you and your families and are here to support you in the days ahead.
My heart also aches for the people who were peacefully protesting when all hell broke loose. Our nation has long been strongest when we give each other space to share our thoughts, frustrations and ideas about how to work through the myriad of issues that face us. We cannot (and will not) let the acts of those who wish to derail the conversation succeed.
Free people disagree, that is what makes a democracy a democracy. By its very nature freedom of thought and expression is messy. But we cannot let those who believe that violence is an answer prevail. Our nation is best when we join hands to move forward in addressing the problems that face us not when we back into corners and only talk to those we agree with.
What I would love to see come out of this tragedy is more conversation not less. More ability to listen rather than rant and a heightened sense of conviction to the principle that all people are created equal.
There will be light so long as we are willing to be our brother/sister's keeper!
PEACE!!
