"There is a light that never goes out"...
...was a song written by Johnny Marr and Steven Morrissey in 1986, released with their album The Queen is Dead.
The inside album cover of the album sleeve featured a photo of The Salford Lads Club.
A club that opened its doors for the first time in 1903 - as the culmination of the vision of my Great, Great Grandfather James Grimble Groves and his brother William "to brighten young lives and make good citizens".
A motto that still guides us today - to keep young people off the streets of Salford and out of gangs.
James and William were the owners of Manchester's largest brewery Groves & Whitnall - both had an unwavering sense of social responsibility and community - and while their ales are now long gone, their real legacy still stands today.
The light of the Salford Lads & Girls Club has shone undimmed for thousands of children over the past 120 years - but today, as this article in the Manchester Evening News so clearly describes, the club now desperately needs our help.
The funding climate is brutal for small charities and Neal Keeling of the Manchester Evening News, has done an amazing job in tonights' edition highlighting the plight of this unique Youth organisation - he showcases the many ways in which the club has shaped the lives and futures of so many disadvantaged young people in the Ordsall and Salford community.

But also how the club has played such a strong hand in grassroots football seing several bright young players go on to play for Salford Reds, Manchester United and Manchester City.
Do please take the time to read these three articles - and if you feel you are able help us to keep the bright lights of this club going - please do what you can.
I have unwavering belief in the team we have at the club today and wit hthe right backing this club will go on to support the community and youth for the next 120 years.

1 个月So interesting to see how history repeats itself - shortly before the outbreak of WW1 in 1911 as reported by the Manchester Evening News the Salford Lads and Girls Club held a fund raiser facing into an almost mirror image of the challenges we face today - we made it then, let’s do it again…. …watch this space for where we go next - pencil sharpening anyone….?!? Spirit of 1911 rekindled to save Lads Club https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/spirit-1911-rekindled-fight-save-30191718?utm_source=app

1 个月I played Sunday morning footy for Paddy Cooke when he ran junior football team at the Club in the mid 1980s. Great place to meet like minded youngsters back in the day. Great cause to donate to.????
Had no idea of the connection Anthony! We urgently need more of this stuff, not less.
