Light Applications For Human Health

Of course, like every living thing on the planet, we are also solely dependent on light for sustaining our health just rather have taken it for granted as it has always been there illuminating our daytime activities and allowing night-time to rest, sleep and recover.

Then, there was indoors and artificial light to extend the day into night-time, sort of, disrupting our natural cycle and latterly the Cathode Ray Tube or Television that expanded our view of the world, educated and entertained in the corner of the room so, no one saw the TV, VDU or DSE in all it's forms as anything but a harmless advance in technology.

Nevertheless, the world in 2020 is having to reframe the belief, from the 1960's, that myopia was an inherited condition and, later that display screens are harmless or low risk to us as, users or operators in the 21st Century.

Yet, over just two decades, since display screens became the new workplace business tool of choice and mobile phones took off with everyone, eye-health, binocular or 3D vision loss linked to myopic disease as, a relatively modern disease, coincidentally presenting following the introduction of education for all, has also presented in the majority of adult DSE operators in the workplace as well.

Like ourselves, CIBSE having followed the Global Research on the "Application of Light in Medicine" has brought together some of the experts on the subject that should also shed some light on why the WCAG 2.1 and the BSI ISO 30071.1 "Accessibility Standards" include "Colour Contrast Validation and Calibration" today.
