Lift & Shift Workloads to Oracle Cloud

Forecast calls for Cloud with a chance guarantee of Move & Improve!

Webinar on Lift & Shift Workloads to Oracle Cloud - March 15 11am (Pacific) 2pm (Eastern)

Businesses, universities, hospitals, and government agencies of all sizes see Clouds on the horizon. Whether these Clouds prove to be daunting headwinds that slow them down or turn out to be accelerating tailwinds that push them beyond, depends on each organization's Journey to the Cloud Strategy.

For many, this strategy hinges on whether to lift & shift workloads to Cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and extend the significant investments they've made in their current on-premise workloads, or pivot dramatically to rip & replace on-premise applications with a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution.

Again, all this depends on your Journey to the Cloud Strategy.

As with any difficult decision, it's hard not to be emotional or dogmatic. But it's important to realize that the Journey to the Cloud is different for each organization, and each organization needs to evaluate important factors in their decision - such as Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), Return on Investment (ROI), switching costs, change management and user adoption, what to do with customizations, user training, and of course, whether the applications you choose work to your expectations.

Oracle PeopleSoft, E-Business Suite, JD Edwards, and other apps unlimited customers have run their applications for years, sometimes decades. Significant investments have been made in upgrades, customizations, bolt-ons, third party integrations, and mission critical business processes. Some of these investments are sunk costs, but others are still providing significant returns and benefits.

On the other hand, with a new generation of IT leadership, and changing of the old guard, new ideas are posited, and moving forward with SaaS becomes the decision of the day.

All these play into your Journey to the Cloud Strategy.

Whither the Cloud?

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) presents a pathway to Cloud for on-premise customers who have made significant investments in applications, are generally happy with the way things are working, but are facing a compelling event such as an upgrade, or time consuming and costly testing cycles, or budget cuts that prevent new hardware and storage purchases. They may want to consolidate their data center, or at least lower cost and complexity. Additionally, over-time applications are customized, sometimes heavily. These customizations need to be maintained, at least in the short run.

Following the dictum "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", many on-premise users are choosing to move & improve workloads to the "complete and integrated" Oracle Cloud. Once workloads are moved to OCI, a powerful set of tools and applications available with Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) can be used to improve and further modernize these applications - adding critical functionality, retrofitting customizations, and delivering new and improved services like Chatbots, or building applications using Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.

So, the Journey to the Cloud can take many paths, what's right for other businesses may not be right for you. However, certain core principles and base-level best practices can be instructive. And this is where an expert Cloud Partner with experience and a record of successful customer projects can play an important role in helping develop your Journey to the Cloud Strategy.
