Like most people in the SaaS world I used to believe that Lifetime deal were horrible for SaaS.
After talking live with Jason M. Lemkin on a clubhouse during the pandemic whether lifetime deals were good or not I changed my mind.
Jason told me that:
- any revenue is good revenue, especially at the beginning. He spoke about the the story of how he sold a software to Google which was supposed to be paid 400,000 dollars but the sourcing guys negotiated down to 40,000 dollars and Jason ended up taking the deal because any revenue is good revenue.
I would add that
1 If you can upgrade any customers later to a monthly or yearly plan with some Enterprise features that are more expensive on your server costs or implementation costs hence there is a valid reason to charge a subscription all those one-time customers, or at least some of them could turn into monthly or yearly subscribers.
2 for some strange reasons, potentially because many of these lifetime deal Byers by a huge amount of deals, only 30% of them actually redeem the deal hence your server costs are even less than you expected.
3 server costs are constantly going down hence unless you have a live streaming solution or video intensive application you really shouldn't worry too much
4 lifetime deal buyers are amazing software testers, hence you're getting testing by people who pay for your software.
