A LIFE'S MISSION TO END POVERTY!

When I was nine, my father picked me up from school to meet Mother Theresa at an orphanage where my father, Atty. Ronald Duterte, and his close friend, Uncle Paul Healy started on a little island in the Philippines called Cebu. I can remember first meeting Mother Theresa, she knelt and cupped my face and whispered in my ear, "Let's feed the children, all you need is love in your heart, my dear child."

Soon after that experience, I wanted to continue to visit the orphanage, each day after school, I would be dropped off at the orphanage to babysit five street orphans. I developed a bond with these children, I had so much fun playing with them, however, each year they would leave the country and be adopted to become members of a new family abroad. I was always saddened every time one of my kids would leave, so I asked my father how I could keep them all so they would never have to leave.

This was my father's response to me. "The country you live in only has two categories of people. The rich and the poor. You are going to be leaving the country soon after high school graduation to study abroad. Learn everything you need to learn, experience different countries, and then come home to share your experiences and ideas and help your people and your country so there will be no poor people. Our very skilled doctors and top scholars leave our country, we are left with unskilled employees who have no access to education. You and very many children may never come back home."

I left soon after graduation with $25 to my name and arrived in Lodi, New Jersey, United States in 1982. Forty years go by, I studied, received my doctorate, and experienced life in the United States. I arrived poor back in 1982 and unfortunately, after recently being laid off, after 40 years of being employed, a widow of a US soldier who was denied VA benefits as a surviving spouse, still living paycheck to paycheck like many Americans I know.

What were the lessons I learned from my 40-year employment experience abroad that I could share and teach when I journeyed back home?

• Life throws you curveballs all the time, you need to be prepared for life's challenges
• You are on your own, especially when you are at the worst times of your life
• You cannot rely on others for your success, rely on yourself
• There will always be managers and companies that don't appreciate you. Continue to upskill, as no one can predict the future, you will be at an advantage as you will have the resilience to overcome future career challenges as you will become multi-skilled.
• Having a college degree or a Doctorate in the workplace does not matter, it is what you can bring to the table that matters.

My father passed in 2005, and as I look back at my life after being laid off and unemployed, I started to reflect on my father's ask. To end poverty for a country and a people. Now forty years later, I asked myself if I could fulfill my father's dream. And how do I accomplish this, while being unemployed, without the means to influence anyone?

This was when my knowledge about SDGs and sustainability played a huge role in launching a female minority business. The mission was simple, to end poverty.
