Life's Journey
We are all at different stages of our journey through life, and whether we want to admit it or not, some of us are much closer to the end of the path than the beginning.?If we can leave that path a bit easier to navigate for those coming behind us, the benefit to our infrastructure and society will be tremendous.
Life will always throw obstacles and challenges in front of us and nothing anyone can do will ever eliminate these unexpected events. But through interaction with our future engineers and sharing of our experiences, we can hopefully provide them with more tools to effectively manage the challenges they will certainly encounter.?
It is incredible to watch these young men and women grow from nervous and uncertain underclassmen into confident Juniors, Seniors, and young professionals! Knowing that we may have aided in their professional development, even in some small way, is what it is all about.
For the past 3+ years, AmeriTex's involvement with Civil Engineering students has continued to grow.?Interaction with 9 different schools and the facilitation of over 1300 students to attend Branch meetings, Student Symposium, and CECON, demonstrates our dedication to the next generation of the "Designers and Builders of the Quality Of Life". Words cannot describe the pride and joy we share as we participate in the development of our future engineers and infrastructure professionals.

So, let this be a challenge to all ASCE members. We will continue to make sure the students attend, but we are issuing a challenge to meet and speak with students you encounter at upcoming meetings and events. Perhaps there will not be time to have a conversation, but never underestimate the positive impact of a friendly introduction or handshake. Our shared experiences are learning and building blocks for our future engineers and ASCE members. By engaging with and listening to students and their challenges, we can help ensure the future of our profession and ASCE is bright and in capable hands. ??

Ron Reichert attended Drexel University where he earned a BS in Civil Engineering. He has been heavily involved with ASCE committees and events at the local, state and national level, and currently serves as Practitioner Advisor for Texas Southern University ASCE. Ron has over 24 years of experience in specification and selection of infrastructure materials.
