Lifelong Learning: Unlocking Your Potential as a Leader
Day -????Transformational Tuesday
?
?"In a world that is constantly changing, there is not one subject or set of subjects that will serve you for the foreseeable future, let alone for the rest of your life." - John Naisbitt
?
While the concept of lifelong learning was first proposed by Basil Yeaxlee in 1929, as the world rapidly evolves and knowledge quickly becomes obsolete, the need for continuous growth and development is more important than ever. ?The notion of lifelong learning reflects that from birth to death, we are in a process of constant learning and development as we pursue knowledge, skills, and competence, driven by personal, societal, and employment-related motivations. It encompasses intentional formal learning activities as well as unplanned informal learning experiences. It is a mindset that enables leaders to thrive in a rapidly changing world.?
?
?? As Peter Drucker (1959), one of the most influential management thinkers who also coined the term “knowledge worker” suggests, “we now accept the fact that learning is a lifelong process of keeping abreast of change. And the most pressing task is to teach people how to learn.” ?Embracing lifelong learning allows us to stay ahead of the curve, adapt to new challenges, and seize opportunities for personal and professional growth. By continuously expanding our expertise, we become valuable assets to our organizations and create lasting impacts in our respective industries. ?
?
?? Lessons from "The Art of Learning"
If you ever saw the film Searching for Bobby Fischer, about a child prodigy and chess champion, you may enjoy learning more from this inspiring individual.?Based on his life story, Josh?Waitzkin later wrote the classic?book, "The Art of Learning," which provides valuable insights on achieving mastery in any field. By integrating some of its key lessons, we can further enhance our understanding of effective learning and personal growth as leaders.?
?
?? ?Embrace the Journey
Transforming into a confident leader is not a linear path. It involves continuous growth, learning, and self-discovery. Similar to?Waitzkin's?emphasis, we must embrace the learning journey itself, appreciating the ups and downs, successes, and setbacks as they provide valuable opportunities for growth and development. Embrace challenges as learning experiences and stay open to new possibilities along the way.?Transforming yourself into a confident leader is not just about reaching a destination; it is an ongoing process. This mindset allows us to continually grow, develop resilience, and maintain a passion for learning.?
?
???Develop Resilience and Adaptability
?Waitzkin's?experiences as a chess prodigy and martial artist underscore the importance of resilience. As leaders, we face inevitable challenges, but it is through resilience that we overcome them. Leadership roles often come with unforeseen obstacles and changes. Developing resilience allows you to bounce back from setbacks and maintain a positive mindset. Adaptability enables you to navigate through uncertainties and embrace change as an opportunity for growth. Cultivate these qualities by seeking diverse experiences, learning from failures, and embracing new perspectives.?
?
?? Understand Your Learning Style
Waitzkin's?insights on individual learning styles remind us to reflect on our own preferences and strengths as learners.?Recognizing your unique learning style helps you tailor your approach to acquiring new knowledge and skills. Whether you are a visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learner, understanding how you learn best allows you to optimize your learning experiences. Experiment with different methods, leverage technology, and seek feedback to enhance your learning process.?
?
?? Nurture a Growth Mindset
The growth mindset, a concept highlighted by both Carol Dweck and?Waitzkin, is a powerful driver for personal and professional development.?A growth mindset is the belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication and effort. Cultivating a growth mindset helps you embrace challenges, persist through setbacks, and see failures as opportunities for learning and improvement. Encourage a growth mindset within yourself and your team by providing constructive feedback, promoting a learning culture, and celebrating continuous growth and development.?

A true leader knows that in order to be successful one also has to surround themselves with intelligent people with a wide variety of skills. That way the leader can learn from all, be successful at their role, let others shine in their areas of expertise, promote them and as well give credit where credit is due. That is why when I am in my next role that is the approach I am taking because that is the type of environment that I thrive in. Best to be transparent, and not be fearful of your own staff. Let their skills shine and so will you. Thank you for sharing this article Eric Goodman, Ph.D.
