Life As A Volunteer By CorpsAfrica/Malawi Exchange Volunteer in Senegal Ms. Tamandani Mwase
Having recently completed my Bachelor’s degree in Human Sciences and Community Services, I found myself pondering the next steps in my journey.
Initially imagining a stable job in the field with a decent salary, my perspective took a turn when I discovered the CorpsAfrica Volunteer program. Joining the program from 2022, I was assigned to serve in NKhotakota District, far from the comforts of home.?
Living amidst the stark realities of poverty was eye-opening. Interacting with individuals of all ages, from the young to the elderly, revealed the broader world beyond my previous environment.
One emotional moment occurred during a conversation with a young girl at a local primary school. When I asked about her aspirations, I almost shed a tear when I heard her say “I want to be like you”. I paused and thought to myself that this girl really wants to be like me?
I thought I was far from being a role model or it was not yet time to be one or maybe I just underestimated the power of my role. This exposure highlighted the impact of simply being present as a young woman who had finished school, offering support to others in need.?
This encounter prompted me into action. I initiated part-time classes and career talks, attracting not only the girl but also her friends. Our time together became a source of excitement and anticipation.
Through this experience, I realized the underestimated power of my role and the potential influence I had. It fueled my determination to give back and serve selflessly.?
Engaging with 72 community members in a pig farming project further solidified my commitment. Addressing issues of household food insecurity and financial instability, the project involved training in pig and business management, constructing sheds, and purchasing piglets.
The pass-on aspect of the project, where community members would benefit as the pigs reproduced, showcased their dedication to self-development and sustainability.?
