Life transformation through changes in habits

Life transformation through changes in habits

Simple changes in your daily habits – that would transform your life.

In modern days complexity of cutting-edge competitive environment – being mediocre and unwise is not even a matter of choice. You got to confront, contest and conquer to survive through and then with your smartness, wisdom and insights thrive upon. It’s about survival by being outsmart, outperform and outshine.

When I had started my work life, I was certainly not smart enough, though excellent in academics, learning and hardworking – I had lot of lows and gaps on social skills, workplace adjustments, team coordination, and above all very low emotional quotient (EQ). I have worked on all those parameters, fought with my own inner self, made hell lot of mistakes, refined myself to be what I am today- thanks to my determinations, supports of best friends – Ashwini Sharma, Ankur Singh Dana et al. without them I would have been too na?ve to get through those changes and transformations.

Charles Darwin, (English Naturalist: 1809 - 1882) has profoundly said, “It is not the most intellectual of the species that survives; it is not the strongest that survives; but the species that survives is the one that is able best to adapt and adjust to the changing environment in which it finds itself." Changes, I rather paraphrase, good changes is the only wisdom to practice and follow as cardinal principle, in life. While your journey of transformations could be very challenging, extremely tough and harshly oppressive, in the end that would foster – camaraderie of virtues, resilience of benefits & lifelong permanent changes for good.

Being smart is absolutely not only about learning and presenting – its about practicing healthy habits, staying positive, feel contended with things you do and build pathways of fulfillment in life.

1.???? Restricting from media, lavishness and entertainment:

We live modern days world od over burden of information and excessively morbid phenomenon of entertainments. You may like it or not – those things of excessive indulgence make us dump. Nonstop social media scrolling, incessant entertainments and limitless information – what next? Unlike everyone in my circle, I have no Tiktok, no Netflix, no Facebook and I have never played video, computer and mobile phone games ever in my life. I do watch contents on YouTube for few minutes, restricted to my research topics, and I seldom watch any movies. Zero downloads, zero songs in my three handheld devices. The outcome, I have space in my mind to feed what really matters, I read, reflect and refer what is really required. ?

I feel relieved. Not watching those useless and enforced contents makes my life far simpler than most of the people. I have nothing influenced and enforced thoughts in my mind, and I have control to think about what I important for me. I can view the world as real as I can, and this makes my thoughts not manipulated and my mind healthier. Moderation is the key – practice self-restrictions, limit those exposures to social media, entertainment and lavishness for your own good.

?2.???? Traveling & exploring:

Traveling and exploring certainly would make you wiser, pragmatic and smarter. I must admit, I cannot be like legendary wanderer Ibn Battuta, that he studied, played and practiced his legal profession while traveling. However, in spite of busyness of work and personal life – I like to travel to regions & places, where I had never been before, at least once in a year.

Hardship of travel, learning from experienced of journey gave me power of endurance, can survive like a minimalist and can adjust in live in very limited means & provisions. Traveling gives you memories, permanent remembrances of places, sites and sights. They form life-long souvenirs to cherish and treasure upon.

3.???? Learning from mistakes:

Do you allow yourself to make mistakes, learn from them and never repeat them? If not, then you are making biggest mistake in life. Do not restrict yourself from trying something new, make mistakes, learn from them and commit to never repeat them again. Mistakes and learning outcomes are the biggest lessons in life. As a wise individual, do not make all your mistakes by yourself – learn from the mistakes of others, as you would not live that longer to make all of those mistakes by yourself and learn from them, that’s a reality, accept that.

My mistakes made me wiser, smarter and more practical. I learn from mistakes of others, notice them and promise myself to not to make them by myself. I am smarter today, because yesterday I made lot of mistakes and learn from them and today, I never repeat those mistakes.

4.???? Leading a physically active life:

Proactive life, physical fitness and an alert mind – they are all interlinked. When I exercise, DIY, outdoors and sweat, I feel more focused and efficient at work and in my studies. I am currently into the role, whereby my mindfulness is the entire skill I need in my current job. There are no re-takes and re-attempts, once a decision is taken it has severe impact whether good or bad as an outcome. As an expert, Dr. Lila?Landowski?opines that, “exercise makes new brain cells, increases the ability to learn, and memorize.” I fully have to endorse with this, as when I have physically active day, I make better in my functional role, decide well and execute nicely.

Jordan Peterson?has an very useful opinion in this context, he says, “human cognitive ability decreases after 25 years old, but exercise staves that off.” As I often say, your successful day start a night earlier – a good, sound and enough sleep makes your next day productive and very efficient. Switch-off, plug-off and sleep well. Wake up early, be active physically, start your day with light exercises & stretching. I start my day by cleaning my garden, feeding my pet country chicken, watering plants, cleaning my cars and home. Handwash my cloths, iron them and get ready for work – these give me enough exercise and stretching to recharge my body and make me fit for the day. Physical exercises make you wiser and I really have experienced this.

5.???? Practice silence:

As famously was said by Chinese Philosopher Confucious, “Silence is a true friend who never betrays.” Silence is a powerful practice to attain wisdom. It takes an individual who is confident and secure to service the stillness. We all live in a very noisy world – whereby each moment is passed though infinite words and speeches, hence your choice to be quite is valuable. Let’s take a look at quiet people in our surroundings. Most of them have above-average intelligence, are quiet, and when asked for their opinion, they give very useful and meaningful advices.

As commonly heard words said by Zeno, “We have two ears and one mouth; therefore, we should listen twice as much as we speak.” I was not a quite person in the past, I had opinion about each and everything in the world and often would speak about them, how na?ve and ignorant I was, now I realize. Now, at this stage of life, I do not talk much, avoid speaking about everything and anything and remain careful when I am with others, especially in social circle.

When I do not speak, I observe and learn from others. Speaking without restrictions is about giving information without any returns. when we are silent and observe, we gain new information and become smarter. You may be called arrogant and termed as introvert. Fair enough, however, it’s not about becoming an introvert, but it’s about shifting the focus from speaking to listening. If you are not sure what to say, better be quiet - watch, listen, and observe.

Takeaways for transformation:

I personally draw immense inspirations from golden classical words of Shakespear, Hamlet, Act II, scene ii (287–298), “What a piece of work is man! How noble in reason! how infinite in faculties! in form and moving, how express and admirable! in action how like an angel! in apprehension, how like a god! the beauty of the world! the paragon of animals! And yet, to me, what is this quintessence of dust?”

The most beautiful and precious thin in the universe is human mind, a faculty with infinite possibilities to discover, develop and deliver anything under this sky. Do not over indulge in entertainments, travel & explore, learning from mistakes, be physically active, and avoid useless talks. Your brain is powerful gift by nature – preserve it, nurture it and develop it. Be responsible, reasonable and become remarkable in life.

Iqbal Azim, thanks for sharing your perspectives on the topic and your life journey that has made you successful. Growing up, I often heard the adults in my family speak about the principles of moderation from an Islamic perspective and this is similar to other religious doctrines . This means creating a balanced life, not being an extremist and still experiencing things in moderation. A great point that you also raised as a key takeaway. I enjoy looking at travel channel, foreign movies or listening to others share their travel experiences, living vicariously when I am unable to travel. This helps me understand different cultures and perspectives. It makes it easier to understand also from a business perspective, especially in the context of social innovation/ social entrepreneurship. I came across the Japanese concept called “ Ikagai”, which means “ the reason for being or to live ”. This in essence encapsulates how one can transform his/ her life and changes habits through (i) what one loves (i.e., passion and mission) (ii) what the world needs (i.e.,mission and vocation) (iii) what one gets paid for (i.e., professional and vocation) and (iv)what one is good at (i.e., passion and profession) and learning from mistakes.
