Life is Short….Be Ready!

Two weeks ago, I lost a good friend. He was 49 years old, and his time on earth was short. Andrew had a profound impact on those around him, including me.

Andrew was witty, funny, smart and athletic. He had the gift of memorizing scripture and coming up with the right thing to say at the right time. Andrew struggled mightily with his physical and emotional health. I don’t know if it was a result of his struggles or just who he was, but Andrew was one of the most humble and loving people I ever knew. He was mission-minded and cared deeply for those around him.

Being Andrew’s friend was difficult, but incredibly rewarding. The greatest gift I received from him was an attitude of holding things loosely, including life on this earth. Andrew often talked about his readiness for heaven, while at the same time, living a full life on earth.

One time we were on a mission trip together in a very rough neighborhood and two people were arguing violently in the street. While the rest of us stood there in fear, Andrew jumped to the scene and broke up the fight. I was amazed and frankly, envious of his fearlessness. He was fearless because he knew that God may not protect him from his earthly end, but He would protect and care for him eternally.

I believe God will do the same for me. Life is short. Be ready.
