Life-Saving Window Service

Life-Saving Window Service

When you think of window service, the last thing you may think of is a medical visit. But that's precisely what ChenMedders from our Edgewood Dedicated Senior Medical Center in Jacksonville, FL provided to a patient in order to save his life.

When contact could not be made with a patient, Dr. Nelki Rivera-Acosta was worried about her patient and asked her staff whether someone would be able to go to his residence to check up on him on a Friday evening. Care Promoter Evelyn Poore volunteered to perform a home check. However, when she arrived at the patient's home, she was unable to get anyone to come to the door.

"It’s great to work for a company where the mission and vision are not just on a wall in a conference room."

Following her intuition, Dr. Rivera called first responders to go to his home and perform a wellness check, but when they arrived, they found the patient on the floor and unable to move. The patient refused the recommendation to go to the ER because he was afraid that if he left, someone would break into his home.

Knowing that the patient refused medical attention, Edgewood's Center Director, Ron Gobble, decided to drive out to the patient's home to see if he could convince the patient. When he arrived, the patient could not get off the couch to unlock the door. This had our care team worried about the patient. Believing that they needed to be persistent with the patient, both Ron Gobble and Dr. Rivera drive out once again to the patient's home. Talking to him through the dirty window of the apartment, Dr. Rivera finally convinced the patient to go to the hospital to treat an acute kidney injury, sepsis, acute pancreatitis, and gastrointestinal bleeding. After his short hospital stay, he continued his recovery in a Skilled Nursing Facility.'

“It makes me so proud to work with the PCPs at this center because they’re all like Dr. Rivera. They all go above and beyond, but especially in this case,” says Ron Gobble. “It’s great to work for a company where the mission and vision are not just on a wall in a conference room. It’s something we live every day, we talk about every day and we have outcomes because of it every day. It’s an amazing thing to watch.”

What a great example of what medicine should be is instead of dollars and cents only!! We really need to start doing disease prevention instead of focusing on only treatment of disease!!!
