A Life Saving Story
Kelly Piccininni
Senior Director, HR Operations and Shared Services at Northside Hospital
I often use this blog to say how proud I am of the Northside Family for their complete dedication to caring for others in the community, both at work and during their off hours.
I would be remiss if I didn’t take this opportunity to recognize the example set by Amy Berryman, our director of critical care, during a pool party she attended with her kids in July. About two hours after she got there, Amy overheard a young girl tell her parents she had seen a baby at the bottom of the pool.
Fully clothed, Amy dove straight into the pool, found 3-year-old Bryson Rogers lying on the bottom and brought him to the surface.
As others at the party dialed 9-1-1, Amy got busy saving Bryson’s life with skill and professionalism.
Bryson was taken to Eastside Medical Center and later airlifted to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite Hospital, where he recovered.
What Amy did was the true definition of “heroic,” taking quick and decisive action to avert what could have been a horrible tragedy. It also showcased the kind of caring people who make working at Northside such a special experience.
While Amy is humble about her heroism, she should know how proud everyone at Northside is.
“When I heard about this incident and how Amy reacted, I was not surprised at all,” said Metta Waters, Northside Hospital director of patient care quality. “We're so overjoyed at the outcome and really proud of her.” I couldn’t agree more. While I am so impressed by what Amy did, I also am not surprised, either. That’s just the dedication of the Northside Family in action!
