Life moves pretty fast.

Name the movie.

Actually you don’t have to but if you can’t you’re missing out on a fantastic and pretty much iconic movie. Anyway it’s a poignant message for today and one that applies to me constantly meaning I have to force myself to stop and take in my surroundings.

Take this image I shot the other day, it’s an area of Leeds that I swear I’ve never noticed before and yet I work as a photographer in Leeds constantly.? I think my problem is that I’m so focussed on the job at hand that I simply don’t notice anything as I’m moving through a city to meet clients and shoot their brief. And that is a problem!

You’d think that as a commercial photographer I’m always wandering around with a camera shooting my surroundings or looking at scenes for my next shoot but that’s not the case as I visit so many cities across the UK they sometimes just roll into one scene. Plus I’m focussed on the client’s needs first and that is always my priority.

Maybe though I do it unconsciously. I mean, I’ve stopped to photograph this scene haven’t I? So why did I shoot it? Was it because it struck me as a symbol of constant change, the emergence of new development from the old whilst preserving the traditional as a forever nod to our history? Or do I just see beauty in industrial scenes and I’ve been a photographer so long that grabbing an image along the way is part of my nature. Either way I love this image and wanted to share it with you.

What’s the message though here? There has to be a reason for me to share (I’m not of the generation that shares for no good reason). I suppose it’s to impart wisdom as I get older and to say “take time to stop and look around”. We’re all so focussed on the job at hand that we’re missing out on things around us.
