Life Made Easier: The Power of Systems

Life Made Easier: The Power of Systems

Welcome to this month's edition of "Thriving @ Work”

I read this week that Barack Obama only had 2 suit colours. ?With the intention of?simplifying the whole business of how to look presidential every day without it taking up any precious time or decision making capacity. ?And that?got me thinking that we all have lots of things we do that, if we simplified them, we could feel better and?achieve more.

In his book?Atomic Habits James Clear talks about building routines that support us to achieve our bigger goals. ?Small simple actions done consistently can make a huge difference over time.

So inspired by these thoughts?here's a few ideas, and my challenge to you is to?try the ones that resonate &?come up with a few of your own.

Simplify Your Wardrobe:

Can you design your own work uniform(s)??? Take away the daily decision making and?look the part? ?All you have to do in the morning is get dressed, check you?look smart? & then forget about it for the rest of the day?

Set up?Smart Eating Systems

Deciding what to eat every day can be another source of stress. Meal planning and prepping can save time, money, and promote healthier eating habits. So, can you simplify breakfast? ?The same healthy meal every day (plain yogurt, fruit & nuts - perhaps varying the fruit or nuts if it gets boring), 7 different healthy breakfasts that you rotate. ? And lunch; a mixed salad & vary the protein or go to Greggs every day & choose wisely?

Fitness Systems

A 30 minute walk before you leave home, regular gym time or an evening wind down yoga session?

Work Systems

Some ideas;

v Start the day with a clear desk

v Always plan your day

v Book a short daily meeting with yourself to have focus time

v Always ‘process’ everything in your inbox first thing and last thing

v Talk to your team every day

v Do ‘something’ on that big project every day

Short simple?activities that?help you stay focused, reduce the temptation to multitask, and ensures that important tasks get the attention they deserve?

Good luck! ?And I’d love to hear your ideas too.

Hi Kate Simpson MBE DL. Coach and Mentor. I do love the idea of streamlining and with little time on my hands this sounds like a great idea so thanks for sharing. But... I get a huge amount of joy out of choosing what clothes suit my mood and what colours will make me feel good today. I guess it's about choosing what's right for you and not trying to do everything. Some things might work and others won't but we all need balance in our busy lives!
