Life-Long Learning Is Not An Option, It's A Necessity
Today we are going to speak to the idea of 'lifelong learning' because...so many people wrongly believe that once they are done with the high school or college studies that there is no need to learn anything else. That is the reason why so many people live average to poor lives...because they are unwilling to learn what needs to be learned first to become the best they can at whatever their profession or vocation is, and secondly because they fail to understand that technology is moving so fast now, that if one isn't on top of it - or at least has someone to help them stay on top of it, the chances of failing become very high.
For myself, being a learning disabled kid having a tough time getting through elementary school, it is quite a compliment to my mom who spent endless hours tutoring me on top of all the other extra help I received along the way, that I absolutely love to learn about just about anything my mind can comprehend. The world is full of amazing people doing amazing things to better help us understand it - both the physical world and the non-physical world.
Now the truth of the matter is that it takes having a great curiosity about the world, about different aspects of our world to want to learn about these various subjects. However, this I can most certainly promise you...if you lose your curiosity, you are going to lose your enthusiasm for living and therefore become what I call 'the living dead'...walking through life without any feelings at all - just making the motions while feeling empty inside because there is no 'life' inside you any longer.
I am always telling people, especially the younger kids that I am surrounded by here at the University of Haifa that the best gift they can give themselves besides eating healthy one item foods and making sure to get physical activity in every day, is to continue to keep their curiosity about the world and what they are here to do to make it a better place for their having been here.
I say this because I have had too many friends who lost their curiosity for life and ended dying much earlier than need be. They allowed the struggles of making a living to get to them. They allowed the negative emotions of others to bring them down. They allowed other peoples' agendas to become their own. None of these are workable for anyone for any period of time.
The real wealth that comes from living is having a healthy body, mind (including self-regulated emotions), and spirit. The way that one makes sure all those occur is to be involved in activities every day of your own choice that you so enjoy that you couldn't imagine doing anything else. And, by the way, when one finds those activities they enjoy doing every day...learning becomes the side-effect because of the desire to learn everything one can about that oh so alluring activity, subject, or idea.
Learning: Being a lifelong learner is not up for discussion these days given how quickly technology is replacing older ways of doing things. However, when one keeps one's curiosity for those activities, subjects, or ideas lifelong learning is going to be the best ever side-effect to keep your mind nimble and your nature young at heart. That's an excellent deal when one contemplates it...don't you think?
