In life, as in games, we don't always get dealt the best hand, yet it's often our approach to these challenges that defines our journey. This idea is at the heart of "Seven Two," a track from my latest album that uses the game of poker as a metaphor for life's unpredictable challenges and the resilience required to transform them into victories.

Here's the demo version of the song, as you might recall, from my latest write a song a day challenge over this past winter:

And here's the official version from the "Fight the Fear" album on Spotify

The Essence of "Seven Two"

This might surprise you, but when I was in my late teens / early twenties: I used to play Texas Hold Em poker, and I was really good at it. I was even top of my state for 6 months.

So when I wrote "Seven Two", it wasn't just about praising random numbers; it's a life lesson wrapped in a melody. Inspired by the game of Texas Hold Em poker, where a seven and two hand is deemed the worst, the song challenges the listener [you!] to make the most of whatever hand they're dealt in life. It's about resilience, grit, and the raw determination to turn less into more.

Here are some of the lyrics:

She was only 16 when she learned

Listening to everybody saying she was a curse

She didn’t yet understand what made them feel that way

It’s funny what fucked up things the insecure will say.

She grew up in a shell of a life – the only way she knew how

Playing a 7 and 2 and trying to figure it out

When you got a PHD in desperate, hungry and poor

It’s funny what motivates a young woman once scorned

Cos the pressure makes the diamond shine

The darkness makes a candle bright

The painful only makes us strong

You can only have a right when there’s a wrongSo who you wanna be?

So what you gonna do?

Who you wanna be?

What you gonna do?

With your 7-2

In other news... I've had some pretty cool [and rather random] events happen lately:

  • I recently spoke with Jamie Truman of Truman Charities on how adversity can be a catalyst for growth and creativity. This enriching conversation is available on Apple Podcasts and explores the transformative power of music in facing life's adversities.

  • I'm also honored to be featured in this month's edition of The Difference Press's "Inkubated Magazine". This edition of INKUBATED focuses on podcasting for business, and how to use a podcast effectively. However, my specific feature discusses the innovative idea of investing in theme songs for businesses and organizations to enhance unity and brand identity. Not only does music's universal appeal significantly strengthen team cohesion, but it can also assist with market presence. You can grab your own FREE copy of the INKUBATED magazine here!
  • This past Thursday, in partnership with Eco Catering, I performed at a uniquely themed event where my songs "Songbird," "Puppet," and "I Am" were each paired with specially crafted hors d'oeuvres. It's a rather out-of-the-box approach to music and dining, but I'm a big fan of unorthodox. ;) Events like these are a testament to the magic that music can bring to any gathering, blending art with culinary delights.

Looking Ahead

If you're planning any events and considering unique entertainment options, I'd love to discuss how we can make your event unforgettable. Whether through song, themed performances, or creating an anthem for your team, let's make magic happen together.

Here's what's coming up this week and next - and yes! The final leg of the YES Tour 2024 is just over a week away!

And that's about it from me today, friends, but before I go:

Remember that life, much like poker, presents us with risks and challenges that can easily scare us, or make us want to shrink. But obstacles are merely opportunities in disguise. How we face these moments can define our path to success. This week, I challenge you to embrace your challenges, transform your 'seven two' moments, and celebrate the wins, no matter how small.

Have an amazing day on purpose,

x
