Life is a journey

Life is a journey

In my journey through life’s ups and downs, one harsh truth hit me like a ton of bricks: not everyone who smiles with you is genuinely rooting for you. It’s a lesson that’s both hard to swallow and eye-opening. And let me tell you, figuring this out wasn’t a walk in the park; it took me a whopping 50 years to see things as they really are.

I’ve come to see the patterns; not all applause is genuine, and not every congratulation comes from the heart. This lesson has been learned through observation and, admittedly, through personal trials.

We grow up believing in the goodness of people, imagining our friendships and relationships as these unbreakable bonds based on mutual support and love. But reality has a way of throwing curveballs, showing us that sometimes, those we count on might actually be counting our flaws, secretly hoping we stumble. It’s a bitter realization, especially when it comes from those closest to us.

So, what should a person do when faced with this truth? Here are a few life lessons I’ve learned along the way.

Trust me, I’m no sage or guru. I'm just someone who’s made plenty of mistakes and learned a thing or two about navigating human connections. Let’s be real for a moment. No one is perfect, myself included. We all have our moments. But when you’re on the receiving end, when your success becomes the target of jealousy, it’s a whole different ballgame.

Why Success Lights the Fuse

Success, in its essence, is a mirror for others. It reflects back their fears, their insecurities, and their unmet aspirations. When you succeed, especially against the odds, it forces those around you to confront their own lives. And not everyone likes what they see. Instead of looking inward, they project those feelings onto you. It’s not fair, but it’s human nature.

Guard Your Energy

I’ve learned the hard way that not everyone deserves a front-row seat in the spectacle of your life. Some folks are just there to spectate and speculate, not to cheer you on. Recognizing who’s genuinely by your side and who’s just taking up space is crucial. Protecting your energy means being selective about who you let in. And yes, it’s easier said than done, but oh so necessary.

Cherish the Real Ones

While realizing that jealousy and backhanded compliments are more common than I’d hoped, I’ve also discovered the beauty of true friendship and love. There are people out there who will celebrate your victories as if they were their own and who will lift you up when you’re down. Hold onto these gems; they’re rare and invaluable.

Embrace Being Alone

I used to fear being alone, thinking it meant I was unloved or unworthy. But I’ve come to realize that there’s a profound strength in solitude. In those quiet moments alone, we find our true selves and inner strength. One of the greatest gifts you can give yourself is learning to enjoy your own company.

Cut Out the Noise

If something—or someone—doesn’t bring you peace or contribute positively to your life, it might be time to let go. This isn’t about being cold-hearted; it’s about being mindful of what you allow in your life. It’s about making space for growth, joy, and peace. Remember, it’s okay to walk away from situations and people that drain your spirit.

Share Your Light, Not Your Spotlight

Celebrating your achievements without alienating those around you is a delicate balance. It’s about sharing your light in a way that inspires, not intimidates. Be humble in your success, offer help when you can, and always remember where you came from. Sometimes, showing vulnerability and gratitude can turn jealousy into motivation—for you and for them.

Trust the Process

Finally, remember that life is a journey with its own set of challenges and triumphs. Not everyone will understand your path, and that’s perfectly fine. Stay true to yourself, keep pushing forward, and trust that everything will work out in the end. After all, it’s your journey, not theirs.

Keep Marching Forward

Ultimately, the path is always forward. Your success is yours to celebrate, learn from, and build upon. Keep your integrity intact and your focus sharp. Remember, the journey isn’t about proving anything to anyone but yourself.

As someone who’s seen a fair share of eye rolls disguised as smiles, I can say that while the journey isn’t easy, it’s incredibly rewarding. The trick? Knowing who to share it with, when to offer a hand back, and when to nod and move forward.

Your real success lies not just in what you achieve but also in how you navigate the envy that comes with it. In the end, staying true to yourself is the greatest victory.

These are the lessons I’ve learned. We might not always get it right, and that’s okay. The beauty of life lies in our ability to keep moving forward, learning as we go, and finding joy in the journey, even when the road gets rough.
