"Life isn't too short. Life is too long," my client said the other day. "Too long to be stuck doing something I don't like."
In a world focused on FOMO and life being so short that we have to hurry and squeeze it all in, I thought this phrasing was a breath of fresh air.
Because sometimes we get comfortable being uncomfortable. We talk ourselves into sticking it out even when we want something different. We tell ourselves the devil we know is better than the devil we don't. That life is too short to make a huge transition now. That it's not the right time. That we're too young or too old to do that. That we don't have enough time or money or energy to get what we want.
I've definitely been there. One huge example in my life was staying at a job much too long. I remember at that time just really wanting "a job offer I couldn't refuse." One that would be so amazing that I could quit immediately. I wanted out of there so badly, I was so frustrated. But I didn't know what I wanted next, I just didn't want the job I had. I cried almost daily. It was a miserable year. But I didn't feel like I had the strength, energy or time to go after another role. I told myself that looking for a job was a full time job. And I was already working overtime and wedding planning with Adam. So I just daydreamed about that elusive job offer I couldn't refuse.
And then... I got exactly what I asked for. A job offer I couldn't refuse - I was let go 2 weeks before my wedding.
Adam said it was the wedding gift I really wanted but wouldn't get myself.
And I'm so thankful for that gift, the one that taught me that life really is too long. It propelled me to where I am now, and also showed me that it's not worth it to be miserable. We need to notice when we're comfortable being uncomfortable. When we get used to whatever is going on. Because all we have to do to change that is decide that we are willing to be a little more uncomfortable now in order to go after what we really want. Or even to just figure out what we really want.
I think back to that girl who would cry at her desk and wish I could tell her that it is worth it to move, try something different, put herself first. That life is too long to allow herself to be miserable, stressed and burntout. That leaving that job, no matter how scary it seems, is the very thing that will allow her to get what she wants. That taking the time to ask herself the hard questions will help her figure out who she is. And that she deserves to live the long life. Not the short one.
So what are you putting up with? Where are you comfortable being uncomfortable? What would change if you decided to see how life is too long?
