Life Interrupted

You may recall that I was organising an event for girls and women about all things 'confidence', that was due to take place this year called “360 Degree Women”.  Unfortunately, and most regrettably the event did not happen, and I have been absent from LinkedIn for some time. I apologise to all of you who were expecting to hear from me. I explain…  

In March, my life was interrupted when my sister died from Cancer.  After seven-years of fighting this punishing and cruel illness, I held her hand as she drew her last, agonising breath.  Pauline’s death hit me hard - I felt broken - unable to continue with the event. This past year has been a strange and challenging time, but I am fortunate to have a close and strong family and the tremendous support of friends and work colleagues.

In some ways, Pauline was my inspiration behind the theme of the event; she loved others more than she loved herself; she wanted the best for others - always; never believing that she could ‘be more’ or do more with her life.  Through her lengthy battle with Endocrine Cancer – she found inner-strength and courage - dealing with the excruciating pain of five major operations, lengthy stays in hospitals, care homes and a hospice, and fighting back from the clutches of death more times than I care to remember. 

Talking with her over the years about life, its meaning and purpose, helped me to deepen my understanding of the impact that a lack of confidence can have on the life chances of girls and women.  I would share ideas and updates about the project with her and her eyes would light up. She would encourage me with the event and hoped to be able to attend.  I have learned that grieving is not a process that can be rushed. Slowly but surely, I am healing.
